The expectation for tipping at sit-down restaurants (i.e., waiter/waitress) is 15% for good, but average, service. 20% for exceptional service. This has been true for decades. Poor service should be either not tipped or tipped very small to be clear that you didn’t forget. There is no expectation to tip for fast food or coffee shops, though it can be a nice courtesy. Also you are free to tip more if you are feeling generous.
