Studying aerosolised viruses is challenging, in that each virus requires its own infrastructure (unique cell lines, assays, etc) that take time to set up. Can't measure a bunch easily

@ukhadds This is amazing. The benefits of ventilation are then two-fold. It allows indoor air to be exchanged for clean outdoor air (reducing the amount of virus in the air) AND it lowers CO2 (reducing the survival of the virus in the air).

@psvbluemts The experimental data is the decay rate of a single population of viral particles. We use that data to model transmission rish wherein the viral load is simultaneously being exhaled and breaking down.
@ukhadds Does this look at the scenario of infectious particles being exhaled once, then the subsequent decay in infectivity, or does it assume the emission is continuous?
This research furthers our understanding of the environmental conditions that affect the transmission of respiratory viruses. It also directly links how the conditions that drive #climatechange also increase transmission risk.
The results of this study reinforce the importance of both #ventilation and masks in limiting the transmission of respiratory viruses.
The slow decay phase measured using the CELEBS is similar to the decay rate measured using other techniques, such as rotating drums.
Conversely, CO2 concentration has a small effect on the Lag Phase and a massive effect on the Slow Decay Phase. Thus, the concentration of CO2 would be expected to affect long distance transmission of the virus and have only a minor effect on short distance transmission.
For example, the Lag Period is highly affected by humidity, while the Slow decay region is not. Meaning that humidity would be expected to affect short range transmission and not long-distance transmission.
Collectively, the triphasic decay profile of respiratory viruses affords new insights into how conditions affect transmission. It provides a framework to discuss how environmental factors such as humidity and acids will affect transmission through their collective effect on decay
Slow Decay Phase: In the Slow Decay phase, the conditions in the droplet are becoming less toxic to the virus, where the pH is slowly being reduced by the trace amount of acid in the air. The rate of loss in this region is highly dependent on the acid content of the air (CO2).

That said, my current focus is more about the general dynamic (ie. what is driving the viral decay) as opposed to exact decay rate of the different variants of influenza. While it's important to know the latter, I think there's more utility in the former.

@ukhadds This is amazing. The benefits of ventilation are then two-fold. It allows indoor air to be exchanged for clean outdoor air (reducing the amount of virus in the air) AND it lowers CO2 (reducing the survival of the virus in the air).
@silviafrankeao1 @Leseerlaubnis Possibly(?) If I've learned one thing during the pandemic, is that I need to "stay in my lane" when talking about science. And this is most definitely out of my lane...
@ukhadds @Leseerlaubnis There could also be a possible link between CO2 and the intensity of autoimmune driven allergic reactions. I was in a region without cars in summer - had no pollen allergy there.
