We’re aware there’s been discussion in the last 24 hours regarding our use of AI in relation to voiceover work. There is some important context to this, which is explained here bbc.in/3xclyCN
You can read more about the BBC’s plans for Generative AI (Gen AI) and how we plan to use AI tools responsibly here ⬇️ bbc.com/mediacentre/ar…
@bbcpress @braintree_ Was this really a statement, two sentences, and two links? I thouthg you would have resurces to rummarize all key points and issues in to one page, with no need to click on
sounds reasonable but then you replace an actor in a small segment with an AI recreation because they were unavailable for a reshoot and then you use AI to create entire segments of your mars documentary because how else are you going to represent these actors on a distant planet? and these little inches get bigger and bigger till the entire movie is AI generated.
Do remember that in these very specific circumstances, it’s likely that the AI voice concerned is actually a representation of the contributors own voice, using for example Personal Voice on iOS. Absolutely AI should not replace humans in any element of production but it seems the context is important here. It affords dignity and respect to the contributor at the end of their life to be able to use their own words in a format they and their family wish. Perhaps the producers could have handled things better with the voice actor by way of a better explanation after gaining approval to broadcast the AI voice however. For those that aren’t aware, Personal Voice is an accessibility feature of iPhone that uses a previously recorded and processed version of your own voice to create text to speech in the event you are no longer able to express yourself verbally youtu.be/ra9I0HScTDw?si…
@bbcpress It seems slightly contradictory that people are losing their minds over this ("a heartless AI"), when the same approach was used in Top Gun: Maverick to recreate Val Kilmer's voice and was applauded as touching gesture.
I do not for a second believe the family initially suggested or insisted on the use of AI - this smacks of someone on the production side wanting a gimmick for the show. While the family might feel pleased with the end result, I'm sure they will be very upset to have been dragged (by the BBC) into this ugly situation.
@bbcpress Please clarify the sources of the audio data used to fit the AI model.
@bbcpress Nope. There’s no excuse. Keep AI out of entertainment
@bbcpress There is no ethical use of generative AI
