The recent TV "experiment" has re-opened the debate about the jury system in criminal trials. If you want to understand why, despite its flaws, the jury system is still far better than the alternatives, this thread from @Joanna__Hardy sums it up pretty well.
If you struggle with the idea that 24 people sitting on 2 separate juries could reach different conclusions about narrow facts then I have some incredibly bad news for you about the alternatives to jury trial.
