Near Holme in the Peak District National Park, architect Arthur Quarmby designed this environmentally sensitive underground house between 1973 and 1975 as a home for himself and his family.
Named Underhill, it was the first modern earth-sheltered house constructed in England.

Today, @HistoricEngland are unveiling a blue plaque in Stoke-on-Trent dedicated to Clarice Cliff (1899-1972), one of the most influential ceramics artists of the 20th century.
To celebrate her ceramic legacy, we’re sharing recently catalogued 1930s Clarice Cliff pieces.
🔵Today we unveiled only the 2nd blue plaque of the @HistoricEngland national blue plaques scheme.
🌞It honours Clarice Cliff - one of the most influential pottery designers of the 20th century.
🔶It's located at 20 Snow Hill, Shelton, Cliff's first independent home.
Footballer and LGBTQ+ icon Lily Parr was born #OnThisDay in 1905.
She became the first woman inducted into the National @FootballMuseum’s Hall of Fame and the first female player to be honoured with a statue at the museum.

Papplewick Pumping Station in Nottinghamshire is possibly the most complete Victorian fresh water pumping station in England. 🌊
Built in the 1880s in the Gothic Revival style, the station provided clean water to Nottingham until it was decommissioned in 1969.
The Old Wellington Inn and Sinclair’s Oyster Room in Manchester were once a house, built around the mid-16th century.
This photograph was taken in 1971 when the building was underpinned and raised to fit the new street level. It was later moved as Shambles Square was developed.
Inside a church in Etchingham, you can find a 15th-century memorial brass for Agnes Oxenbridge and Elizabeth Etchingham.
Some historians believe this plaque could show that the 2 women were seen as a couple by their community. 💕

William Shakespeare is believed to have been born here #OnThisDay in 1564 in Stratford-upon-Avon.
By the 1840s, it was split into a pub, a butcher’s and a tenement and had severely decayed.
Using an early drawing from 1769, it was extensively restored by the Birthplace Trust.
The Prince Alfred in Maida Vale, London, dates from the height of the pub boom in the 1890s.
It contains lavish fittings and exceptionally well-preserved bar compartments, giving a clear sense of the way pubs would have looked and functioned.
Martello Towers are small defensive forts on England's south and east coasts that were built during the 19th century to defend the country against France. 🌊
Let us know where you have spotted one of these impressive towers?
Have you visited Bridge House in the Lake District? 😍
The minute bridge was built in Ambleside in the late 17th to early 18th century and was initially designed as an apple store.
Over the years the building has been a counting house, tea room, cobbler's, shop and more.
During the 1st century AD, the Romans founded the city of Bath due to the allure of its hot springs. ♨️
Over time, its story evolved from a thriving wool trade in the Middle Ages to becoming a prominent spa destination in the 18th century.

The New Inn in Gloucester is a well-preserved example of a 15th-century galleried courtyard inn.
It was built as a hostelry for travellers upon the instructions of John Twyning, a monk at the former Benedictine Abbey of St Peter (now Gloucester Cathedral).
