Moving from routine interceptions to intelligence based enforcement, with clearer limits on where and when goods can be inspected or detained, can reduce unnecessary disruptions for compliant businesses while allowing authorities to focus on genuine cases of tax evasion. For an industry where every unnecessary halt can affect delivery timelines and operating costs, this is a meaningful shift towards simpler compliance, more targeted enforcement and smoother movement of goods across states.

At what point do people become so confident of breaking basic road safety rules that they stop caring about everyone around them? A Fortuner was reportedly being driven dangerously on the Noida Delhi Expressway around 12:15 am, with the driver even standing while the vehicle was moving. What gives someone the confidence to behave like this on a public road? Is it weak enforcement, or simply the belief that there will be no consequences? Either way, this cannot be brushed aside as just another traffic violation. Such behaviour puts other road users at serious risk and needs strict action.

MoRTH’s Chintan Shivir 2026 is a welcome opportunity for the Centre and States to come together, brainstorm and exchange ideas on the next phase of India’s highway development. With the rapid expansion of our road network, the focus now needs to move beyond quantity to quality. Better planning, stronger execution, safer highway design, quality assurance and continuous monitoring will be critical to building infrastructure that delivers for decades. But safer highways also require stronger enforcement. Reckless driving, dangerous overtaking, making reels on the road and other behaviour that puts fellow road users at risk cannot be normalised. Karjan CNG blast on NH-48 is not just a “bad kit” story. It is a compliance failure, and the rules already exist. A retrofit CNG system is legal only if three things line up: a type-approved kit under AIS-024 (ARAI/ICAT TAC), fitment only at an authorised installer, and fuel endorsement on the RC. The cylinder and valve must carry PESO/CCOE approval, and the cylinder must be hydrotested every 3 years under the Gas Cylinders Rules, 2016. Insurance has to be updated after endorsement. An unauthorised shop skips all of this. No valid installation certificate, no RC endorsement, no test record the station is supposed to rely on. That is not a saving. It is an uninsured alteration, and under the Motor Vehicles Act it is enforceable, not optional. Factory-fitted CNG is a different product: approved layout, traceable cylinder, service path. Retrofit can be equally safe, but only inside that chain. Outside it, the owner carries the risk, the insurer can repudiate, and everyone at the dispenser pays for it. Worth checking on any CNG car, OEM or retrofit: RC fuel type, cylinder test due date, and whether the fitter was actually authorised.

A 33-year-old was going home with his wife. He never made it. She survived, permanently disabled. The Bombay High Court was right to keep the then-minor in a reformative home. He was 17 years 8 months, unlicensed, in his father’s SUV. The stunt videos on Instagram wheelies, no helmets, a friend on the bonnet and the clips that vanished after the crash told the Court this was a habit, not one bad night. I have worked long enough with law and mobility to say this plainly: an SUV is not content. A public road is not a playground. Section 12 of the JJ Act protects the child, but not at the cost of everyone else on that road. And Section 199A already warns parents, if a minor drives your vehicle, the law looks at who had the keys. Hide them. Watch the phone. Do it before the next family has to read an order like this.

I came across a pothole-filling machine recently. What struck me was how practical the idea looked: a machine that could help repair damaged roads quickly. We have startups building apps to count potholes, map potholes and report potholes. We even have memes about potholes. But where is the same energy for filling them? Public roads are the responsibility of governments and the agencies they appoint. That should not stop engineers and startups from developing solutions, demonstrating them and pushing for their adoption. In my view, the biggest obstacle may not be the machine. It is the system around it: who reports a pothole, who approves the repair, who pays for it, and who checks whether the repair lasts. A machine can speed up the work, but poor drainage or a damaged road base still needs a proper fix. We spend billions building new highways and city roads. Surely we can invest in better tools and faster maintenance to protect the roads we have already built. I would love to see a city run a public pilot: deploy these machines, measure repair time and durability, and publish the results. If they work, scale them. Road safety deserves more than another pothole dashboard. What do you think is stopping practical solutions like this from being adopted?
