All postdocs in my lab are paid in the range of 85-95K. One of the reasons I can't go beyond is (reverse) equity concerns from HR. I would ideally pay them 105-115K. I think that's how much I could afford based on funding I can pull in & reducing lab size to a functional minimum.

Bay area is very expensive & competition with industry is tough. 90K is just about enough to live without much pressure if one doesn't have dependents. With dependents I think 115K is like absolute bare minimum IMHO for the Bay Area.
@anshulkundaje That's interesting and useful. Can I ask if you put those numbers in NIH grants and if you get any pushback? How do you 'top up' postdocs on fellowships who get $60k? 20x$115k (your current spend incl. benefits) is >$2.3M/year in direct salary costs...i.e. 5 R01s? Impressed!
@anshulkundaje Dang. That translates to only $41-$45k in Nebraska, which is well below where I start PD salaries.
@anshulkundaje Thank you for sharing this. Do you mind sharing what the ‘functional minimum’ is and how you achieved it?
