Seeing people either over-hype some approach or quickly dismiss the choices made by others can become quite frustrating. Always assume people had very good reasons for their decisions at the time they made them. 2/2

@noctarius2k Aaahhh, jetzt wird mir auch klar, warum andauernd einer Kriege anfängt! Dann können ja weltweit nur 254 Länder ins Internet. Wenn keine Zahl mehr frei ist, schwups, kein Internet. Da muss man als Regierungschef natürlich was tun! Alles für die Bürger natürlich!</irony> 🤣🤣🤣

NEW POST Conways Law has been an important part of my thinking for years. Important enough to affect every system I've come across, and powerful enough that you're doomed to defeat if you try to fight it. martinfowler.com/bliki/ConwaysL…

How many websites do you know that only allow 8 character passwords? Maybe let’s finally rethink password policies - or passwords overall!?! via #dataisbeautiful reddit.com/r/dataisbeauti…

@IainHull @jessitron I like to separate into PRIMARY and SECONDARY information here. I.e. what’s the primary purpose/ function of this piece of software. If that doesn’t work, fail fast. All secondary functions should degrade gracefully. Especially in case of failure of other functions #resilience

100% agree! And that counts for ALL software, not only server-side apps but also user-interfaces. Yes, I‘m also looking at you, single-page apps! #ux #principles

Jessica Kerr @jessitron

There’s a tradeoff between “fail fast” and “graceful degradation.” If your app doesn’t start until fully configured, the problem is clear and right in front of you. If it starts but doesn’t do everything, maybe cool this time, but the problem becomes subtle.

The "fail fast" line of thinking, and the reason why people are often wary of partnering with Google for anything mission critical.

Unpopular opinion: Google's willingness to launch products, see if they gain critical mass, and, if not, kill them, isn't a corporate weakness.

next post of the "why we need resilient software design" series, discussing availability in more detail, why failures in distributed system are inevitable and unpredictable and the risks of the widespread 100% availability trap: ufried.com/blog/why_resil…. enjoy if you like ... ;)

Fear of deploys is the largest source of technical debt and wasted time in most engineering orgs.

Edoardo @edoardotenani

Confidence in deploys is a incredibly undervalued engineering metric.

The Brooklyn Public Library has announced that any teenager in America is now eligible for a Brooklyn Public Library card. Teens can sign out ebooks + audiobooks from wherever they live. The move is designed to combat censorship, with some titles listed as "always available."

@jessitron explains the „engine building“ practice with the board game „wingspan“. Interesting! So far I‘ve had a hard time to explain the wingspan ruleset to friends and the majority refused to play the game… 🤔 ok, it might be my explanation skills! 😂
