One of the most frustrating things about being an education reporter is when a school district decides you're not allowed in their classrooms simply because they think you'll be a distraction. It's disrespectful to teachers, students & taxpayers. & a huge transparency issue.
Adding...public conviction registries which entangle 1 in 42 Black men in Illinois. [We mandate people w/ past convictions to return to police stations AFTER punishment or be rearrested. And Illinois makes their housing illegal.]
Reminder: parole, probation, supervision, treatment courts, and pretrial services are a part of the carceral system. Prisons & jails are a big problem, but not the only problem. Communities are becoming open air prisons.
Whoah. We celebrated when a bi-partisan House alliance passed SB3006 to prevent COVID-related evictions + foreclosures. They rushed it over to the IL Senate ready to go. But no, @ILSenDems leadership did not even call the bill. WHY? Did the banker lobby get to them? @frso_chicago

Sen. McGuire sponsored the Ban the Box (“Yes Apply”) bill we worked on. It was written to support everyone with a conviction history, and that correct standard became our campaign ask for U of I. No one left behind.
