When the complex was sold, he received an £18,200 payout from the new landlord to vacate. Instead of returning the money to the parliamentary authorities, he added it to his parliamentary second-home allowance to purchase and renovate a £215,000 two-bedroom, ex-council flat in Kennington, South London. He submitted an expenses claim of £16,644 to cover stamp duty, legal fees, and a new kitchen. Under the rules at the time, taxpayers also covered his mortgage interest payments. Renting While Being Paid Rent: Rather than selling the Kennington flat, Burnham kept it, put it on the private market, and collected rental income. It now looks very likely that there will be no challengers to Andy Burnham for the Labour leadership. Nominations open on 9th July and close on 16th July. If nobody else steps forward he will be enthroned as the new Labour leader and thereby the new Prime Minister with immediate effect. Completely coincidentally the House of Commons goes into summer recess on 17th July. That means the new PM will face zero questioning in the house, no PMQ’s, no attacks from Kemi or Nigel, not need to discuss a single proposal or face any genuine opposition scrutiny whatsoever until they return in September. A man elected on 25,000 votes, who refused to take any questions from journalists, who has not laid out ANY policies, not had a single debate and who hasn’t been a Westminster politician in a decade, just wanders into the top job in the country without so much as a question asked. Is that really how our democracy should work…clearly not😡
