Happy St George's Day, England. The annual parade here in Dartford does mark this each year. Our patron saint's day may be honoured in the breach as much as the observance by many people, but here is my own list of ten things that England and the English can take pride in.
This is me. This is my plan for Blackpool. On Thursday 2 May, vote for an MP who's Blackpool born and bred. Vote Labour.
I really don’t think that this is a major takeaway from that book and its reception

"why do train drivers earn so much more than bus drivers?" is a great economics question.
"Truss did not fall into No. 10 from a spaceship, like some twin-set Mr Bean. She won the leadership because she expressed what Conservatism has become" Truss was a symptom not a cause; & the papers, think-tanks & activists that backed her are still there unherd.com/2023/01/liz-tr…

This morning I attended the launch of @SouthendLabour 's local election campaign at #TheIronworks. The last year under the Tories, locally and nationally, has been poor. We can and will do better. Our slate of fantastic candidates will be champions for their communities.…

The quiet dealignment of 2019-24 - just how much Labour has managed to "lean out of the realignment" - is much the most underdiscussed theme in political commentary today. Will 2024 dealignment prove as temporary as 2019 realignment is the central political question of 2025-28
Love this place names tool. The "-by" endings (in red) show you how far the vikings got (Leicestershire, basically) and "Pen-" starts how the Britons fell back to the west when the Anglo-Saxons came.

Yeah, I agree with this. There is just nothing else that happened in all rich countries at the same time that could explain it.

Every time I hear "but inflation will be at 2% by the election" I now think of this chart from @darioperkins
Some people on left are ambivalent about patriotism & national symbols. There is strong evidence that pride in being British is an inter-ethnic norm. All studies persistently find ethnic minorities have a stronger British identity than the white British & high levels of pride too

🧵New @UCLPolicyLab @UniofOxford & @Moreincommon_ research explores what the public really think about Equality, Diversity & Inclusion. We found Britons are 5x more likely to say EDI is good than bad, but how EDI is framed & it's relevance to people's every day really matters

Disagree. I think they rock. Perfectly suited for finding consensus through incredibly tricky policy issues, such as major constitutional change or the trade offs in reaching Net Zero. It’s a way of forming policy and getting buy-in, but politicians have the final say/vote.
Citizens assemblies are for cowardly politicians who want new ways to deflect accountability. This is a symptom of the modern era of career politicians. Career longevity comes before solving problems. Try this Labour: build houses even if it's unpopular.
Suggesting my MP does not have blood on her hands. huwnotes.wordpress.com/2023/11/20/my-… With thanks to @WarringFictions for a frame for thinking
It's sometimes suggested a more left wing Labour leader would be further ahead than Starmer. Not if that Labour leader were Jeremy Corbyn. We tested a hypothetical with Corbyn facing Sunak and Labour's lead drops by 17 points to a virtual dead head with the Conservatives.
On the Stepping Out of Line Podcast, I spoke with .@WarringFictions about his book, The Dark Knight and the Puppet Master: The Myths that Destroy the Labour Party. If you want to understand the rise of Corbynism, this podcast might just be for you. podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/epi…
As the new series of the Stepping Out of Line podcast approaches, now might be a good time to check out my earlier work. Here is my chat with .@WarringFictions about his book, The Dark Knight and the Puppet Master: The Myths that Destroy the Labour Party podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/epi…
One of the few writing principles I stick to is that almost everything beyond 'said' draws too much attention to itself
The aftermath of World War II. That Golden Age. @WarringFictions #Corbyn
Britain has not been in more desperate need of transformative change since the immediate aftermath of World War II, and yet Labour is less committed to it than ever before.
I've started to believe that absolute lack of power corrupts absolutely too, which is how you end up with a England and Wales Green Party which opposes nuclear energy
Like the reverse of l'esprit de l'escalier, when you think of the ideal comeback when you're walking down the stairs
Many have called on @Keir_Starmer to set out more "vision". But academic and author @colm_m argues past Labour "modernisation" programmes - under Benn and Blair alike - show rigid or radical visions can become millstones or shut out new ideas: labourlist.org/2023/05/people…
They just ignore me and keep ordering fictional daquiris
Boy do I have a book proposal for these guys
I can't believe Naomi Klein had to write a whole book about not being Naomi Wolf, what a time to be alive.
Absolutely fascinating how the ADHD overdiagnosis is – for most people – a brand new story, with brand new facts, about something they were unaware of before, and yet the divide in views maps virtually 1:1 on to a range of other, largely unrelated issues.
Hard to argue with the logic of this from @blairmcdougall
NEW. Nostalgia for a lost Golden Age is a feature of progressives & conservatives alike. A character in my #London novel, written as @VaneWriter, is of the latter leaning. Early in the story he enters the East End: onlondon.co.uk/john-vanes-lon…. @WarringFictions #coronation
Dawn Barnett and I have opposing views but I’ve never doubted her commitment to Hangleton residents over 20 years. I’m totally ecstatic over Labour’s victory but also grateful to people from all parties who’s public service has come to an end. Standing is never the easy option!
I bought some Gordon Brown bin bags
Can something die if it never truly lived? The liberal dream of Brexit was always a mirage pushed by a small elite in the Tories. It was fatally undermined by the fact that, fundamentally, those who voted for Brexit never wanted it - in fact they wanted to exact opposite.
“The people I know who went into buy-to-let landlordism are not the rich people I know. It's the immigrant families.” @garyseconomics thinks anti-landlord politics can - at times - look like middle class people punching down. (2/5)
