@stevemarusich For real. Honestly, if I had a lot of money growing up, I wouldn’t have picked up music either. I literally played basketball, played my guitar, played at church every weekend. Kids these days having an abundance of distractions. If I had a smartphone I would’ve had no chance.

I had a birthday party. At McDonald’s. Most didn’t show. Maybe two did? Even then it was hard. I can feel the pit in my stomach from it. I also once attended a birthday where I was the only one who showed. Those are hard memories without the catastrophe of NO ONE showing up...

Couple raw thoughts. The early church planting world within big Eva (think A29 and its friends) turned church planting and threw in some startup language and military cosplay, not actually attracting pastors, but business guys who are type A. As a church planter, I cannot tell you the number of “church plant boot camps” I’ve been too. It’s not boot camp, it’s a conference, stop. Even my assessments (and others like mine) have you do a “shark tank” pitch on why you deserve funding… In my view, a lot of the planters who were assessed and sent should have got an MBA or started a company and served as a faithful elder to a pastor-shepherd BUT they grew up in a church context where ministry was on a pedestal and lacked vocational imagination for Christians. They raise money, they plant churches, they lead them the best they can but they’re not Pastors / Shepherds, and that’s ok. But you can only operate outside your giftedness for so long until you decide to move on. Hence they realize, you know what I love Jesus and his church but I’m way better suited for business than ministry, and they pivot. It’s not a bad thing, lots of those churches continue with someone better suited to pastor the next iteration. A lot of this could have been avoided in church plant organizations developed a team approach to planting, not the solo pastor and if church planting stopped functioning like an industry.

Anyone else notice that lots of the guys from the 00s young church planter crowd–young Gen X to elder millennials–moved from ministry to things like sales, real estate, crypto, etc? Wonder what's up with that. (This is anecdotal for now. Don't ask me for numbers. )
