A line of strong to severe storms is expected to move into northern IL late this evening into the early overnight hours. The primary threats are damaging winds and localized large hail, but brief tornadoes cannot be ruled out. The severe storm threat will diminish overnight.
Damage surveys are still in progress today. Our 5 survey teams are finding evidence consistent with at least EF-3 strength in some areas. The preliminary ratings will be shared as soon as we collect and analyze more data. We will provide additional details as soon as we can!

There sure is a lot of arguing going on during and after these tornado events amongst meteorologists and also chasers. I recommend just staying focused on our role and not as much on these arguments. I am focused on the storm chase tomorrow and highlighting recovery efforts.…
@BadamsProblems I’ll give you the same reply I did him. What happened yesterday was downright terrifying regardless of colors on a map. Let academics make these debates…the chasers did their job of observing & reporting. Arguing like this on X does nobody any good.

Tonight is a STARK reminder of why declaring a day a "bust" because it doesn't churn out dozens of photogenic, daytime tornadoes is absurd. Post-sunset environmental evolution, upscale growth & mergers, and nighttime vulnerability can lead to the catastrophe we're seeing unfold.
