FGN bonds are paying about 17%. So why would you buy a stock? 🇳🇬
Recent FGN bond auctions have cleared at roughly 17% to 18%. And it's a government instrument, with interest paid twice a year.
That number is quietly the most important benchmark in Nigerian investing. Why?
Because every NGX stock now has to answer one question: "Why should I take stock-market risk when the government pays me about 17%?"
Here's how to think about it:
1️⃣ Subtract inflation. A 17% yield isn't 17% in real terms. Take the latest inflation figure off it. That's your real return
2️⃣ Compare the risk. Stocks can fall 30%. A bond held to maturity pays its stated return. Different risks, different jobs
3️⃣ Ask what the stock must beat. If a company's earnings yield and growth can't comfortably beat the bond, why own it?
4️⃣ Mind the access. At the DMO auction, the minimum subscription is N50,001,000. Most of us reach bonds through brokers, mutual funds or other routes, so compare the fees
And one more thing for the long term: the government is borrowing heavily. N7.15tn was allotted from January to September, more than double last year's N3.48tn. High borrowing keeps yields high, and that affects company valuations too.
Bonds aren't "boring" and stocks aren't "exciting." They're tools. Use the right tool for the job.

Markets move fast. Your decisions don't have to. ⚡
Every day brings a new headline:

Here's the truth most beginners learn the hard way: speed feels like edge, but it usually isn't.
By the time a headline reaches you, thousands of professionals have already acted on it. Racing them is a game most of us lose.
Slow down and use this 4-step filter instead:
1️⃣ Ask: does this change the business? A headline about the price isn't the same as a change in the company
2️⃣ Check the fundamentals. Revenue, profit, debt, cash flow. Has anything real shifted?
3️⃣ Check the valuation. Great company, wrong price is still a bad buy
4️⃣ Decide your timeframe. If you're investing for years, one week's noise rarely matters

A "cheap" stock can be the most expensive mistake. Here's the steel example. 🏭
Cleveland-Cliffs (a US steel producer) just posted its best quarter in three years. Adjusted EBITDA hit $612M, up from $286M the quarter before.
Then management said 2027 EBITDA could top $4B. Three months earlier, the talk was about $3.3B.
Notice what moved? Not the factory. The assumptions.
That's the trap in cyclical stocks (steel, oil, mining, shipping):
1️⃣ Earnings swing with prices. A small rise in steel price can lift profit a lot, because the fixed costs are huge
2️⃣ Cheap can mean "peak." A low valuation on record profits can look attractive right before profits fall
3️⃣ Debt magnifies everything. Cliffs had about $7.7B of long-term debt at the end of June. Good years shrink it. Bad years don't forgive it
4️⃣ Forecasts have conditions. The 2027 target relies on today's index price forecasts. If steel prices drop, so does the number
What I like to see before trusting a turnaround story:
→ Free cash flow, not just EBITDA
→ Falling debt, not just promises
→ Profits that survive a weaker year
One strong quarter is a signal. Three strong years is a track record.

SpaceX + Tesla "merger talks": what's actually confirmed? 🤔
Headlines say "merger talks underway." Let's slow down and separate fact from noise.
Confirmed:
→ Both boards formed special committees of independent directors
→ No terms agreed
→ No guarantee a deal happens
→ Tesla's shareholder filing doesn't include a merger vote
Not confirmed: a deal, a price, a timeline, or a vote.
So what's a special committee, and why should you care?
Elon Musk runs both companies. If he sits on both sides of a deal, he has a conflict of interest. So independent directors negotiate for each company's shareholders instead, and Musk says he's not in those discussions.
Three questions every shareholder should ask when a "mega-merger" headline drops:
1️⃣ Who gets paid what, and is the price fair to my side?
2️⃣ Does combining two businesses create real value, or just two very large spending programs under one roof? SpaceX alone spent $19.6B on capex last quarter
3️⃣ Does the deal need my vote, and has it been called?
A rumour moves prices fast. Fundamentals move them slowly and for longer.

NGX or US stocks? Most Nigerian beginners ask the wrong question. 🇳🇬🇺🇸
They ask: "Which market gives more returns?"
A better question: "What am I actually buying, and in which currency do I need to win?"
Here's the grounded comparison:
1️⃣ Currency. NGX stocks pay you in naira. US stocks are priced in dollars. A 50% gain in naira isn't a 50% gain in dollars if the naira weakened. Check both.
2️⃣ Depth. The US market is far larger and more liquid, so it's usually easier to buy and sell without moving the price. On NGX, thin trading means price swings can be sharp.
3️⃣ Concentration. A few big names can drive NGX's index. NGX's All-Share Index rose 56.79% by July 31, but check which stocks did the lifting before you chase it.
4️⃣ Information. US companies report on tight schedules with deep analyst coverage. Nigerian data can be harder to find, so your own research matters more.
5️⃣ Cost and access. Compare brokerage fees, transfer costs and exchange rates, not just the share price.
Neither market is "better." They solve different problems:
→ Need naira growth and local dividends? Study NGX.
→ Want dollar exposure and global companies? Study US stocks.
→ Want balance? Many investors split, based on goals and risk.
And here's the part hype skips: both fail if you buy a bad business at a high price.

Salesforce agreed to pay $47.50 cash per share for Braze. So why did Braze close at $45.57?
If the buyer pays $47.50, shouldn't the stock trade at $47.50? 🤔
Not quite. That gap (about 4%) is called the deal spread. It's the market pricing three things:
1️⃣ Time. The deal isn't expected to close until Salesforce's fiscal 2028. Money tied up for months or more could earn something elsewhere
2️⃣ Risk. Regulators, shareholder votes or financing can derail a deal. If it fails, the stock can fall back hard
3️⃣ Uncertainty. An agreement isn't cash in your account yet
Here's the lesson beginners miss: a takeover headline isn't a guaranteed profit.
And there's a human side. Braze IPO'd at $65 in 2021. Anyone who bought then is still well below their entry price, even with a premium offer on the table.
A takeover price tells you what a buyer will pay. It doesn't tell you what you paid.
Before you chase a "buyout stock", ask:
→ How long until it closes?
→ What could block it?
→ What happens to the price if it falls through?
FQVDM determines what you buy, while the crash framework determines when the risk/reward becomes attractive.

Why do stocks fall after good earnings? 🤔
Intuitive Surgical just beat on profit AND revenue. The stock still dropped about 7%.
Netflix beat on profit too. Also down about 6%.
Here's the part most beginners miss: the market doesn't price what a company did. It prices what a company did versus what was already expected.
Look at ISRG in July:
→ Beat estimates ✅
→ Stock fell nearly 11% ❌
→ Why? The outlook for procedure growth disappointed investors
(This quarter's reason isn't confirmed yet. Possibly it's the outlook again, but that's speculation.)
So when you see "beat estimates," ask three questions:
1️⃣ What was already priced in?
2️⃣ What did management say about the next quarters?
3️⃣ Is growth speeding up or slowing down?
A great company can be a poor buy at a high price. A price drop after good news is not always a bargain, and not always a warning. It's information.
Don't buy the headline. Read the guidance.

Biotech is a coin flip. Here's how to invest in it without picking the winning drug.
A promising drug can fail a trial after years of spending. Shareholders are left holding the bag. 💊
But every lab running those experiments still needs equipment, testing systems, filters and supplies. Win or lose.
That's the "picks and shovels" idea, and it's why people study companies like Thermo Fisher.
Its Q2 2026 results (not the latest quarter):
→ Revenue up 10% to $11.99B
→ Organic growth: 5%
→ Adjusted operating margin: 22.8%
Notice the gap between 10% and 5%? Acquisitions did part of the lifting. Always check organic growth, not just the headline.
Why suppliers can be steadier than drug developers:
1️⃣ Demand comes from thousands of programs, not one drug
2️⃣ Instruments lead to repeat sales of consumables and services
3️⃣ When research budgets recover, orders can rise before drug approvals do
The risk is real too: if pharma and lab funding tightens, suppliers feel it. Steadier is not the same as safe.
Before you buy any "boring" supplier, ask: is growth organic, are orders rising, and am I paying a fair price for it?
FQVDM determines what you buy, while the crash framework determines when the risk/reward becomes attractive.

A stock can fall 15% in a day. A bond tells you why.
Everyone loved the AI "neocloud" story. Then the bond market started asking questions. 🧐
CoreWeave rents out computing power for AI. Its bonds recently fell to 81 cents on the dollar, with yields above 15%. Its shares dropped about 15% on the same day. (stockalarm)
Meanwhile, Elice dropped 32% on its Seoul debut and Firmus shelved its IPO.
Does that mean the business is doomed? No. Management points to a $104B backlog of contracted revenue.
But it shows a lesson most beginners miss: bond investors get paid first, so they often get scared first.
Before you buy any "growth story", check 3 things:
1️⃣ How much debt funds the growth?
2️⃣ Can cash flow cover the interest, or does it depend on new borrowing?
3️⃣ What are the bonds yielding? High yields mean lenders want extra pay for extra risk
Also worth knowing (a forecast, not a fact): Gartner predicts over 80% of neoclouds may not survive independently by 2030.
Revenue growth is not the same as a strong balance sheet. Hype fades. Debt payments don't.

SpaceX just posted a $4.4B profit and beat estimates. Should you buy the headline?
The numbers 👇
→ Revenue: $14.58B, up 161%
→ Net income: $4.4B versus a $1.1B net loss a year earlier
→ Analysts expected roughly $1.57B (aol) (aol)
A big beat. But a smart investor reads past the first line.
Ask yourself:
1️⃣ Where did the growth come from? The AI segment brought in $7.6B, mostly from renting out computing capacity
2️⃣ What did it cost? Capex was $19.6B, with AI taking $16.4B of it, and the company expects it to stay near that level
3️⃣ Is the profit repeatable? Bloomberg's reporter noted that capex is depreciated over a longer horizon, which helps explain how profit can beat even with heavy spending (aol) (aol)
Spending more than your quarterly revenue can be genius or it can be fragile. A single beat doesn't tell you which.
That's why we look at quality and valuation, not just the headline.

JPMorgan is coming to Nigerian banking. But you can't open an account there, and that's by design.
Many people are saying it "paid ₦50bn for a licence." Let's slow down. 🧐
What's confirmed:
→ JPMorgan plans a merchant bank in Nigeria, pending CBN approval
→ ₦50bn is the minimum capital a merchant bank must hold, not a fee
So why can't you open an account?
Merchant banks don't chase salary accounts or ATM cards. They serve corporates, institutions and governments: dollar loans, capital raising, deal advisory.
Why should an investor care?
1️⃣ Big companies could get easier access to dollar funding
2️⃣ It signals global confidence in CBN reforms
3️⃣ Speculation, not fact: deeper bond and equity market liquidity
But a licence is not a profit. FX risk and regulation still decide the outcome.
Before you cheer the headline, ask: does it change a company's fundamentals, or only the mood?

Can you explain what your business does in one sentence a 10-year-old would repeat?
If not, an investor won't do the work for you. They'll just move on.
I see this on both sides of the table:
❌ Founders bury the product in jargon
❌ Investors skip what they can't explain in one line
The fix takes 10 minutes:
1️⃣ Write: "We help [who] solve [problem] by [how]."
2️⃣ Cut every word your mum wouldn't understand.
3️⃣ Read it aloud to someone outside your industry.
4️⃣ If they ask "so what does that mean?", rewrite it.
Investors do the same test on companies. If I can't say what a business does and how it makes money, I don't buy. No clarity, no capital.

Be honest: have you ever sold a stock because earnings "looked bad" when they didn't? Tell me below. 👇
