We saw a team built to be awesome with hedging and rotating with some good switching mixed in be one of the NBA’s most drop heavy. How much of that was poor decisions regarding defensive scheme and player role usage vs key injuries to guys fitting into those plans? It’s a mix.

LA's defensive approach was less sharp in this one and had less success. Their secondary rotating was often late as well, resulting in the first okay game against the strong double + bump of the series for Denver. If the bump guy falls asleep you're in trouble, and LA was.
Jokic post scoring possessions based on LA's defense for their series: Vs 1v1 & Digs: 1.17 points per possession Vs all other Help: 0.77 PPP On Post Pins: 2.00 PPP (4 points in 2 possessions) 40% of G5 plays were 1v1 or digs (not good for LA) after only 11% (very good) in G4.

LA was 1 set away from having the fewest unique set plays run on the season in this game. They ran a bunch of sets (good), but were using the same ones over & over that were working (good) instead of trying to run 40 things. 5 sets were used more than once. 1.22 combined ePPP.

LA's three most used individual plays in today's game: 13 times: Double Drag: 1.07 PPP, 1.33 expected PPP 7 times: Delay Chicago: 1.11 PPP, 1.34 ePPP 7 time: Spread Step Seal: 0.67 PPP, 1.20 ePPP Shot making shot making shot making
The dashboard & tracker doc w/LA's half court offensive info is updated & complete for the year. 8242 plays. Next season I'll be adding screen coverages faced for each set so we can see how each play works against each type of defense over the course of the year.
Those 13 open 3s are LA's 2nd highest total for the Lakers in a game on the entire season. They got the looks. Just couldn't hit.

I wouldn't blame the playcalling for LA's loss tonight. Yeah, I'd love to have seen more in the 2H. Overall it was at a very high rate (64%) and the team was bricking. Not a good game to stink on 3s and FTs. Lots of missed opportunities.
This ended up being a big asterisk healthy game with Wood/JV not playing in a game LA could've used their size. It's tough to play your first minutes in a must-win game. I wonder if we find out later if they truly were able to play or if that was just gamesmanship from LA.

After averaging running organized offense 50% of the time in the regular season, in this series LA put up: G1: 51% G2: 60% G3: 54% G4: 65% G5: 64% Some of their very best playcalling of the entire season (other than G1). I'd love to have seen it be in this ballpark in the RS.
LA finishes the game with: Chicago action: 1.20 PPP Double Drag: 1.22 PPP They were cooking in both halves
1.3 PPP with AD on-court and 0.83 with him off-court in the second half for LA's half court offense
LA's organized offense rates: Q1: 83% Q2: 68% Q3: 50% Q4: 53% The frequency really dropped off in the second half and you could see it.
LA's expected points per possession on organized offense today is their highest in over 20 games. The shot making just hasn't been there.

Another viz I've been playing around with is on-ball time through a series. The Cavs/Magic series typifies that best. Donovan was on-ball a bunch early, but Suggs has forced him to defer to Garland & LeVert. The Magic started running through Paolo, but shifted to Franz.

You’re not imagining it, there have been more smoked layups than usual in the playoffs so far. Teams are only making 49.7% of contested shots inside 10 feet. Normal range over this portion of the playoffs is ~54-55%
