I built a trading bot that buys stocks that are being bought by politicians. It is up 20% since it launched in May 2022. The market has been flat during the same time period. Here are some of the strategy’s most successful moves: LOCKHEED MARTIN On October 17th of 2022, the strategy entered a position in Lockheed Martin, $LMT. This came after purchases of up to $115K of $LMT by Representative Scott Franklin on September 12th, which were disclosed on October 11th. The day after the strategy entered this position, Lockheed announced better-than-expected quarterly revenue due to increased demand for its F-35 fighter jets. Representative Scott Franklin sits on the House Committee on Appropriations, which oversees government expenditures. $LMT rose over 18% before the strategy exited the position approximately two months later, on December 27th. CHANNELADVISOR On August 22nd of 2022, the strategy entered a position in ChannelAdvisor, $ECOM. This came after a string of $ECOM purchases by Senator Tommy Tuberville from March 8th to July 14th worth up to $665K. Less than a month later, it was announced that ChannelAdvisor would be acquired by CommerceHub. The stock jumped over 50% and Tuberville sold the next day. The strategy generated a 48% return off of its $ECOM position. TESLA On May 15th of this year, the strategy entered a position in Tesla, $TSLA. This came after a handful of congressional purchases of Tesla stock, including buys by Senator Tommy Tuberville, Representative Josh Gottheimer, and Representative Dan Newhouse. The strategy exited this position on June 20th, following sales of Tesla stock by Senator Tommy Tuberville, Representative Josh Gottheimer, and Representative Michael Garcia. In the 36 days that this position was open, $TSLA rose over 64%. Since the strategy closed the position, $TSLA has fallen 22%. NGL ENERGY On April 10th of this year, the strategy entered a position in NGL Energy, $NGL. This move was made as a result of Representative Mark Green’s March 24th purchase of up to $250K of $NGL, which was disclosed on April 1st. $NGL has risen over 28% since it was added to the Congress Buys Strategy, while the market has risen just 8% in the same time period. Representative Green has continued to buy up stock in NGL. We estimate that he has made more money off of his $NGL trading than he has off of his congressional salary this year. FINAL THOUGHTS It’s worth noting that despite the outperformance of the Congress Buys Strategy, it may still be held back by weak disclosure regulations. Members of Congress are given 45 days to disclose transactions, but the penalty for late disclosures is a mere $200.
