But this phenomenon is happening because, with very few exceptions, the last 20 years has taught people that to be optimistic about tech is to be a rube Those of us whose natural disposition is “this could be great!” looked stupid time and time again as the promise of progress was revealed to be a get-rich-and-get-out scheme for a few thousand people. Or a new way to mine our data. Or an environmental disaster. Or an illegal grift. Or a surveillance tool.
