AHMED KABALLO: INSIDE BRITAIN'S BASE IN KENYA The town of Nanyuki, sitting precisely on the equator and nestled in the foothills of Mount Kenya, is home to a sordid secret. Against the wishes of locals and the Kenyan people at large, it plays host to the largest British Army base in the world: larger even than any facility in the UK itself. Sprawling over some 250,000 hectares of what is supposedly sovereign Kenyan territory, the British Army Training Unit Kenya (BATUK) is a living reminder of the nation's unfinished struggle against its former colonisers. In his new investigative documentary, 'BATUK: Britain's Colonial Grip in Kenya', Sovereign Media director Ahmed Kaballo exposes the devastating human cost of this largely unknown outpost of imperialism. It's a cost counted in untold numbers of livestock and human beings alike, torn apart by unexploded ordnance. Water and soil irrevocably polluted by chemical munitions. And most horrifyingly, a decades-long string of unpunished murders and sexual assaults, protected by British soldiers' extraterritorial immunity, leaving behind hundreds of broken lives, grieving families, and fatherless children. What's more, at the May 2026 Africa Forward Summit, President William Ruto gleefully offered up his country's sovereignty to yet another imperial patron: Emmanuel Macron of France. The deal was sweetened by a 'defence cooperation agreement' complete with the same promises of legal immunity enjoyed by British Army r*pists and murderers, and the eventual prospect of France's own BATUK. Shortly after the summit, Ahmed Kaballo sat down with Margaret Kimberley of Black Agenda Report to discuss the documentary's damning revelations. 🚨 Victory for Digital Rights and Constitutional Freedom The High Court has declared unconstitutional key provisions of the amended Computer Misuse and Cybercrimes Act that allowed authorities to block websites without adequate constitutional safeguards. In Petition E671 of 2025, Law Society of Kenya, TISA and Others v Attorney General and Others, the Court held that Section 6(1) was impermissibly vague and failed to meet the constitutional threshold for limiting rights under Article 24 of the Constitution. The Court also struck down Section 27(1)(b), finding that its lack of clarity violated the constitutional principle of legality. We continue to stand at the forefront of defending Kenya's Constitution, protecting civic space, and ensuring that power is exercised within constitutional limits.

Enforced disappearance is one of the gravest human rights violations. It robs people of their liberty, leaves families in unbearable uncertainty and undermines the rule of law. No one should be taken by state agents or anyone else and held in secret while their whereabouts are denied. Kenya must criminalize enforced disappearance through a clear and specific law.Doing so would strengthen accountability, help prevent impunity, provide justice for victims and their families, and reinforce the constitutional rights to liberty, due process and human dignity. A democratic society cannot allow people to simply vanish without accountability. Peninah was in her final year of high school, and preparing to sit for her KCSE examinations at the then Don Bosco High School, when she abruptly quit to go live with an older man. Coming from a humble background, and facing rejection from her mum at the time, she found it difficult to survive in school on her own. Although her fees were sponsored by the church, she had to find money for her upkeep, a situation that the older man saw as an opportunity to become her sponsor. “He was my peer teacher and I confided in him with every situation I went through as a young girl and he came to my aid,” recalls Peninah as she reveals the identity of her benefactor. What started off as a teacher helping out a needy student, however, soon developed into an intimate relationship and – inevitably - a pregnancy. Perhaps the teacher convinced himself that Peninah, who was 20 years of age at the time, was old enough to be in an intimate relationship. Whatever his reasoning, the pregnancy signaled an end to Peninah’s education and shattered her dreams for the future she had hoped for. What happened next is best told in Peninah’s own words. “Then ikafika anataka kuacha kazi akaniuliza ataniachia nani huko, so we agreed tukaenda pamoja only 4 months to my KCSE but I had no choice coz alinipromise ntakam kufanya exams baadae. Time passed by I never came back for my KCSE exams. He started to be aggressive huko kwao coz singewahi rudi home juu mamangu angeniuua as I was already pregnant, nikajikaza hadi nkazaa with assault along the way juu mamake alikataa nirudi shule mtoi akiwa mdogo, eti kwanza nilee nanizae wa pili eti shule naeza rudi nkimaliza kuzaa, of which nilikataa hayo yote. Vile nikipona kidonda coz it was c-section, ndio nkapotea nkakuja home nkaelezea my parents everything they did to me. My dad akasema huko nisiwahi rudi nilee mtoi. Later walikuja nanikakataa kurudi coz the man had threats za kuniuua ili asishikwe juu ya defilement ndio abaki na mtoi.” She goes on to say, “Afterwards, nkamshtaki kwa children’s department juu hakuwahi lea mtoi ata. So, after being summoned by the department of children Kenol branch on Sept 6, 2016 hakukuja. Nang’ang’ana na mtoi alone then barua ikatumwa from Kenol through cc wa watoto to Mbooni sub-county on January 3, 2017. Bado he didn't respond nor support the kid in any way. Then shortly after was when he abducted my son akitoka shule, hadi alienda na uniform. I immediately sued him and have been through the courts on and off. The case was in the High Court of which he never came ata siku moja but my advocate pushed through with the case even with his absence all that time. The case was no 491 of 2017, Peninah Wanjiru Wanyoike versus Ismail Matata Kasomo, and the order giving me interim custody was issued on April 4, 2017 by Hon. Z.W Gichana, Senior Resident Magistrate, Nairobi Children's Court. But until to date I have never seen my son nor heard from him. Whenever I call his dad, he never responds to my calls, neither my texts. I have been there severally with authorities to no avail hadi askari wakachoka. So that's my case sijui if hadi mtoi kama ako uhai coz hajulikani kwenye yuko.” We reached out to Ismail to get his comment on the allegations against him but he declined to respond to us. Instead, he called Peninah to tell her there was nothing she could do to him. #SemaUkweli @IG_NPS
