This table, prepared and tweeted by energy expert @AsimRiaz1978, shows different pathways Pakistan and our neighbours India and Bangladesh took in light of rising energy costs. One benefit of passing on higher costs to consumers is that demand slows. However even that has not happened in Pakistan, due to hoarding by oil companies and petrol pumps. Also unlike our neighbours, our refineries have made huge profits, as also written by @AnsarAAbbasi in his article yesterday. To summarise Asim sb’s findings, Pakistan has raised fuel prices by 50%, Bangladesh by 15% and India not at all. This is why our inflation increased to 11% in April and SBP raised interest rates to 11.5%.

However disturbing the numbers of new HIV infected children are, they will make sense only if we have comparable numbers from the same previous periods. Only then a trend can be discerned. I know despite effort you might not have got those numbers, otherwise you would have reported. We need full transparency in public health data only then a a problem can be understood in its entirety. Our bureaucrats tend to hide the disease data and they have this erroneous mindset that by controlling the data they can control the disease!!! Pakistan was successful in dealing with COVID-19 and dengue outbreak in 2019 in Islamabad because we ensured complete data transparency. Unless we change this attitude we will not be able to overcome our growing public health crisis in many disease domains including lethal HIV AIDS.

Overwhelmed. Genuinely. The messages, the shares, the people reaching out from places I did not expect. Thank you. I have not done anything special here. I just put into words what we have all felt. With the world's attention on Pakistan this week, it felt important to set the record straight. Who we are and who we are not. What I think gets missed in conversations about Pakistan is that despite the incredible diversity, the languages, the provinces, the traditions, we have managed to forge a national identity that is distinctly and unapologetically our own. That deserves to be named and taken pride in. I am as Pakistani as they come. I have lived and breathed everything in that piece. At the same time, I've grown up and have spent most of my life outside Pakistan, working in international media, I know how to write for those audiences. That combination is probably why the piece lands. I know the country from the inside. I know how to explain it to the outside. This piece was the bridge. Thank you for crossing it with me.
