This is to celebrate. It is real progress. BUT there is more to do. Third Party material - school reports, heath records from birth, social services material - all demanded of rape complainants before the CPS will even consider a charge - urgently need to be protected too.

This is such an important concession from the government after initial resistance - we helped persuade by looking at models in Canada and Australia that mean victims of rape can receive confidential counselling whilst pursuing a prosecution

Once the law comes into force, police requests for counselling notes will only be permitted where an investigating officer “has reason to believe that the information sought is likely to have substantial probative value”.
