In the late 1940s Jack Northrop aggressively championed passenger variants of the YB-49 Flying Wing. He believed the all-wing jet would excel as an efficient airliner. Promotional films in 1948 showed cabin layouts inside the 172 ft wing. The USAF cancelled it in 1949. 🫡

For the first time, the USAF has publicly confirmed a B-2 launching the AGM-158C LRASM during exercise SINKEX 2026. ​Why does this matter? Because the LRASM isn't a land-attack weapon. It's a stealthy, long-range anti-ship missile built to hunt and sink high-value warships in heavily contested waters. ​Pair that capability with a stealth bomber that can penetrate deep into denied airspace, and you've got a very, very nasty combination. 1/2

The Hughes AIM-54 Phoenix was a monster of Cold War engineering — a beyond-visual-range air-to-air missile capable of Mach 5 speeds, active radar terminal homing, and engagements at over 100 nautical miles. Originally developed for the ill-fated Navy F-111B, the Phoenix (paired with the powerful AWG-9 radar) found its true home on the Grumman F-14 Tomcat. The F-14 became its only operational launch platform, and the combination was game-changing: -The AWG-9 could track up to 24 targets simultaneously and guide up to six Phoenix missiles at once. -This gave the Tomcat unmatched fleet defense capability — able to engage multiple incoming Soviet bombers and their escorts long before they threatened the carrier group. -Variable-sweep wings allowed the F-14 to loiter efficiently at long range, then sweep back for high-speed intercepts or mix it up in a dogfight if needed. In an era of massed air attacks, the Phoenix turned the F-14 into a true “force multiplier” and a dominating long-range interceptor that projected power far beyond the carrier’s horizon. Though it was retired with the Tomcat in 2006, its legacy as one of the most advanced missile systems of its time remains unmatched. 🫡

AI will not make engineers more productive. It will make bad engineering faster. Here's the pattern I see: A junior engineer asks an AI to write the simulation code. The AI writes something plausible. The engineer doesn't fully understand it. The simulation runs. The results look reasonable. The engineer ships it. Nobody caught the edge case in the boundary conditions. Nobody questioned whether the model assumptions were valid. Nobody held the equations long enough to develop intuition. Speed without understanding is not productivity. It's technical debt with better syntax. The engineers who use AI well are the ones who already know enough to catch its mistakes. The ones who don't know enough use it as a crutch and call it skill. AI raises the floor for bad engineers. It raises the ceiling for great ones. The gap between them is getting wider, not smaller. Where are you on that spectrum? Be honest.

Voyager 1 is 24 billion kilometers from Earth. It communicates with us using a 23-watt transmitter. Less than a refrigerator light bulb. The signal takes 22 hours to reach us, traveling at the speed of light. By the time it arrives, it's 20 billion times weaker than the power of a digital watch battery. NASA's Deep Space Network picks it up using 70-meter dish antennas cooled to near absolute zero to reduce electronic noise. The engineering required to hear a 23-watt signal from 24 billion km away is arguably more impressive than the spacecraft itself. Launched 1977. Still transmitting. Still being heard. We built something that works perfectly, 47 years later, in conditions no one has ever tested in. That's what engineering for the long term looks like.
