On the contrary, it is a serious political mistake to think that a 2x/3x to housebuilding can be forced through the existing planning system without a voter backlash. It is designed to generate conflict and resist new homes - you may as well try to drive a lawnmower on the M6.
This is good. ‘Neither NIMBY nor YIMBY’ is the only politically sustainable approach to fixing housebuilding in Britain
As a side note, I think experiential knowledge is part of the reason many of the best football managers were players themselves (although I do think the lack of managers who didn't already have connections in pro football also signifies an inefficient talent market).
Very good and interesting piece on the dynamics, differences, and disagreements across a political movement that increasingly feels will be one of the most influential over the coming years. Includes all the right people: newstatesman.com/comment/2024/0…
Obviously good news, but there is now a problem. Planning reform has taken on a load-bearing role in Shadow Treasury's economic programme (which it can and should). But the policy detail we've seen from Labour doesn't yet match up to this ambition or the scale of the challenge.
Sir Keir Starmer is targeting voters who are pro-housebuilding in a war on nimbyism seen as a critical part of his path to power ⬇️ thetimes.co.uk/article/yes-in…
Ten years since our daughter Lucy was stillborn. We'll never forget her or the person she could have become.
In 2010, the UK government understood - at least once - that you can sometimes gain by leading and not by reacting to the opinion of your voters. UK is one of the few countries where same-sex marriage came from the political right if I am not mistaken...
