Seems like the only part of #Budget2024 that hasn't been leaked relates to #businessrates. Given that its replacement was adopted >3 years ago as Labour policy @RachelReevesMP ought to be able to launch her 'oven ready' scheme. I fear we're set for yet another consultation😠.

The @LibDems commitment to replace #businessrates with this land tax is all but undeliverable. The UK has no register of land ownership, values could not be established fairly given the absence of reliable evidence and tax collection from overseas owners would be challenging.

Reforming the broken business rates system is the best way to revitalise our high streets and help our struggling retailers. @UKLabour have committed to addressing this but must recognise that businesses need more detail about their plans. tinyurl.com/mw6k98zv

Extremely disappointed with the Chancellor's decision to raise business rates. The Conservatives, who promised to reduce them for retail in 2019, have broken their promise.

Time run out for Gov to deliver its 2019 manifesto promise to ‘cut the burden of tax by reducing business rates’. 2019 gross #businessrates payable per OBR was £30.9bn. Their forecast today for 2024/25 is £32.7bn. Businesses will take some convincing that this represents a ‘cut’.

@GarySambrook89 kindly hosted us in Birmingham Northfield where we heard first hand the issues that small businesses face because of business rates. The tax is unsustainably high and must be lowered. The Government must do all they can to help small businesses.

Last night I put forward an amendment to the Levelling Up Bill which called for a fundamental review into the business rates system so we can support our struggling high streets. Sadly this was voted down by 281 Conservative MPs, despite it being in their 2019 election manifesto
