Ibn al-Jawzī a dit : « Aimez avec modération et détestez avec modération. Car certains ont aimé d’autres personnes avec excès et se sont perdus, tandis que d’autres ont détesté avec excès et se sont également perdus. »

Tāj al-dīn al-Fākihānī al-Mālikī (654-734 H) retranscrit cette explication de Shaykh al-Islām Ibn Daqīq al-'Īd al-Shāfi'ī al-Mālikī (625-702 H) dans Riyādh al-Afhām fī Sharh 'Umdah al-Ahkām en l’approuvant : « Il est rapporté de l'un des théologiens spéculatifs (mutakallimūn) qu'il disait : « Je ne déclare mécréant que celui qui m'a lui-même déclaré mécréant. » La raison d'une telle affirmation a peut-être échappé à certains, qui l'ont interprétée autrement que selon son véritable sens. L'interprétation qu'il convient d'en retenir est la suivante : ce théologien avait probablement à l'esprit le ḥadīth selon lequel celui qui traite un homme de mécréant alors que celui-ci ne l'est pas, voit cette accusation retomber sur lui-même. De même, le Prophète ﷺ a dit : « Celui qui dit à son frère : "Ô mécréant !", alors cette qualification retombera nécessairement sur l'un des deux. » Ce théologien raisonnait ainsi : le ḥadīth établit que la mécréance concerne nécessairement l'un des deux protagonistes : soit celui qui prononce l'accusation (al-mukaffir), soit celui qui en est l'objet (al-mukaffar). Dès lors, si quelqu'un me déclare mécréant, la mécréance concerne forcément l'un de nous deux. Or je suis absolument certain de ne pas être mécréant ; il s'ensuit donc que la mécréance retombe sur celui qui m'a accusé. » Je dis (al-Fākihānī) : Voilà une explication judicieuse et une interprétation claire. Et Allāh est plus savant. »» وقد نقل عن بعضُ المتكلمين أنه قال: لا أُكفر إلا مَنْ كفرني، وربما خفي سببُ هذا القول عن بعض الناس، وحملَه على غير محمله الصحيح، والذي ينبغي أن يُحمل عليه: أنه قد لمحَ هذا الحديث الذي يقتضي: أن من دعا رجلًا بالكفر، وليس كذلك، رجعَ عليه الكفرُ، وكذلك قال -عليه الصلاة والسلام-: "مَنْ قَالَ لأخِيهِ: كَافِرٌ، فَقَدْ بَاءَ بِهَا أَحَدُهُمَا"، وهذا المتكلم يقولُ: الحديث دلَّ على أنه يحصل الكفرُ لأحد الشخصين؛ إما المُكَفِّر، وإما المُكَفَّر، فإذا كفرني بعضُ الناس، فالكفرُ واقعٌ بأحدنا، وأنا قاطعٌ بأني لستُ بكافرٍ، فالكفرُ راجعٌ إليه. قلت: وهذا تقديرٌ حسن، وتفسير بيِّنٌ، واللَّه أعلم. You are not a Muslim, nor is your father. Rather, you are a disbelieving polytheist in Allāh." What is the legal consequence for him? He replied: The speaker is to be given discretionary punishment (taʿzīr). For it is stated in al-Naẓm al-Wahbānī: "He does not become a disbeliever by saying, "O disbeliever," to one who is in fact a Muslim; Rather, he bears the sin thereof, and they said: he is to be given taʿzīr." Shaykh al-Islām Ibn al-Shaḥnah mentioned in his commentary: The preferred opinion for fatwā in this matter is that the one who utters such statements, if he intends only abuse and does not believe it [i.e., does not actually believe the person to be a disbeliever], does not become a disbeliever [kāfir]. However, if he believes it to be true and addresses him in this manner on the basis of his belief that he is a disbeliever, then he himself becomes a disbeliever. This is because, when he deemed a Muslim to be a disbeliever, he thereby deemed the religion of Islām to be disbelief; and whoever deems the religion of Islām to be disbelief has committed disbelief. «End of quote.» They have unanimously agreed that he is to be given taʿzīr. And Allāh knows best.

L’imam Fakhr Din Razi dit : « Le mu’tazilite dit : " L’anthropomorphiste est un assimilateur, et l’assimilateur est mécréant. " Nous répondons : Si, par « assimilateur », vous désignez celui qui dit qu’Allah ressemble à Ses créatures sous tous les aspects, alors il n’y a aucun doute qu’il est mécréant. Mais les anthropomorphistes ne disent pas cela. Et le simple fait de dire qu’Allah est un corps n’implique pas qu’ils affirment une telle ressemblance. Ne voyez-vous pas que le soleil, la lune, la fourmi et le moustique sont tous des corps ? Pourtant, le simple fait qu’ils soient tous des corps ne signifie pas qu’ils se ressemblent. En revanche, si, par « assimilateur », vous désignez celui qui dit qu’Allah ressemble à Ses créatures sur certains points seulement, alors cela n’entraîne pas la mécréance. En effet, les musulmans sont unanimes pour dire qu’Allah existe, qu’Il est une chose, qu’Il est Savant et qu’Il est Tout-Puissant. Les animaux, eux aussi, existent, sont des choses, sont savants et capables selon ce qui leur convient. Pourtant, cela n’entraîne pas la mécréance. Enfin, si, par « assimilateur », vous désignez celui qui dit qu’Allah est un corps situé dans un endroit, alors nous n’acceptons pas qu’il existe un consensus déclarant mécréant celui qui tient cette croyance. Car prétendre qu’il existe un consensus sur une question qui fait justement l’objet d’un désaccord est une simple affirmation qui ne mérite pas d’être retenue.» Nihayat Al ´Oqoul Fi Dirayat Al Ousoul / page 558

“By Allah, my son, I summoned the awe of Allah into my heart and the sultan became before me like a cat.” I heard our Shaykh al-Bājī say: ‘Once, on the day of Eid, our Shaykh ʿIzz al-Dīn went up to the citadel to meet the sultan. He saw the armies standing in ranks before him, the royal court assembled, and the sultan surrounded by all the pomp and grandeur displayed by the rulers of Egypt on such occasions. The commanders had begun kissing the ground before the sultan. Al-ʿIzz turned toward the sultan and called out at the top of his voice: “O Ayyūb! What argument will you present before Allah when He says to you: ‘Did I not establish you over the kingdom of Egypt, only for you then to permit wine?’” The sultan asked, “Is this actually taking place?” He replied: “Yes. In such-and-such a tavern, wine is sold, along with other forbidden practices, while you enjoy the blessings of this kingdom.” The sultan said: “My master, I did not institute this. It has existed since the time of my father.” Al-ʿIzz replied: “Are you among those who say, ‘Indeed, we found our forefathers following a certain way’?” [Qurʾān 43:22] The sultan immediately ordered the tavern to be abolished. I heard al-Bājī say: ‘When the shaykh returned from the sultan and news of what had happened had spread, I asked him, “My master, how did it go?” He replied: “My son, I saw him surrounded by all that magnificence, and I wanted to humble him so that his soul would not become swollen with pride and thereby bring him harm.” Al-Bājī asked: “My master, were you not afraid of him?” Al-ʿIzz answered: “By Allah, my son, I summoned the awe of Allah Most High into my heart and the sultan became before me like a cat.” [Tāj al-Dīn al-Subkī, Ṭabaqāt al-Shāfiʿiyyah al-Kubrā, 8/211–212.]
