Water photography is the best when it comes to surf photography. The most critical factor was Pancho Sullivan and my ability to work with each other in such an intense moment.  It ended up in a couple of Rip Curl advertisments and a magazine cover, as I recall… #surf #surf_art

This morning's partial solar eclipse, happened here in Hawaii, about an hour after sunrise and was in its fullest effect around 7.15am. The eclipse was extraordinarily bright. So much brighter than expected, that the camera sensor had a hard time, capturing the actual eclipse.

On this particular day, there was a large bait ball of fish that was bunching up quite a lot, due to some nearby predators. In this particular instance, the fish moved just like a wave in motion except, like if I had videotaped this and played it backward on TV.

The last time that I saw a solar eclipse, was back on October, 13th 2004. I captured professional surfer; Flynn Novak boosting an aerial maneuver against a backdrop of an eclipsed sunset. There will be another one of these solar eclipses here in Hawaii on Monday the 8th.

For me as a photographer, specializing in nature, this is just about as close as one can come to threading the needle in the composition of the image, when working with intense direct lighting. To have the sun just obscured by the foreground, but not entirely.

We are currently transitioning from the summer winter here in Hawaii and it's just been so beautiful and calm during this process. We've had a couple of weeks of almost no trade winds, which results in perfectly glassy conditions for waves. I called this one; Amber Kiss.

Sometimes, it’s just a matter of “being there” I was floating around in and amongst the waves, but the sun was disappearing often, which was making it tricky to get just the right shot, however, there were moments in between. It’s shown here as a 38 x 60 inch canvas.

I just did an interview with the online site; Canvas Rebels. We discussed how important it can be to step out of the usual comfort zone to create truly different imagery. As an independent art photographer, I'm absolutely all about using those different angles and techniques.

This classic surf line-up is from San Diego's famous Surf Shack at Windansea, in La Jolla. What I like about this particular shot is the movement of the waves, allowed by the use of a very slow shutter speed. (I think it was about a 20th of a second. )
