Not a huge leap to suspect foul play. Rumours of links between FACT/military have also persisted for some time. Equally though, Deby was known to take a very active role in military leadership. We'll just have to wait and watch the actions of the military over the coming days...

Déby is a hugely authoritarian leader, but that hasn't stopped France propping him up in the past. Can't see that anything has changed that calculation over the past year, and the last thing the Sahel needs is another active conflict

Interesting that the FCDO has taken this stance - the last time this happened, the rebels were repelled by French airstrikes. Does the UK have reason to believe that won't be the case this time?

However, I'm not surprised. While expectations are pretty high that "she won't be another tyrant (like her predecessor)," she essentially is from the same ruling party @ccm_tanzania whose behaviours have for years been detrimental to political, economic and social progress.

Surely this can be largely explained by government response? In the first wave SA went into strict lockdown with a daily average of around 150 cases. Now it's around 9000/day, but restrictions are still technically at Level 1. theguardian.com/world/2020/dec…
