TL;DR Scotland effectively banned no-fault evictions, & the rental sector grew quicker than England's. And the court system hasn't been overwhelmed. Ireland and several Australian states also boosted renter's rights and still saw renter growth. So why would England be different?
Pay must be addressed if we’re going to reset and reconnect the Met to the communities they serve.
🚨OUT NOW: 20% police pay cut since 2000 makes officers more likely to quit New blog shows that police pay is expected to continue to fall in real terms to 2028, making officers more likely to leave the service smf.co.uk/commentary_pod…
Really interesting report here with international evidence on whether strengthening renters' rights does lead landlords to exit. The short answer is no they don't - at least not for the type of changes proposed in the Renters Reform Bill (when that ever sees the light of day).
🚨OUT TODAY: Stronger protections for renters won’t drive landlords out of the market Fears that stricter regulations - like those in the Renters (Reform) Bill - will reduce the supply of rental properties are overblown. 👉smf.co.uk/publications/a…
Very good that SMF have put evidence to this but also, its pretty obvious that potentially making a slightly smaller pile of gold, or working harder for your pile of gold, isn't going to drive people out of the pile of gold scene...

The winter fuel payment has always seemed weird to me. No suggestion that pensioners paid in for this over time, or that most particularly need it. £2bn a year is a lot!
Current bill support schemes need updating because they are: ❌not generous enough ❌targeted crudely, producing cliff-edges (WHD) and giving to those who may not need it (WFP) While one-off cost of living payments have helped, these are also coming to an end.
Housing crises in the English speaking world An interesting new report from @SMFthinktank looking at the scale of housing crises across the Anglosphere, and what the UK can learn from successes and failures elsewhere. smf.co.uk/publications/d…
It's spring now, and the worst of the energy price spike seems past, but many households will likely struggle again come winter, so we need to put the house in order now. Smart proposal from my SMF colleagues to replace untargeted pensioner support with a more progressive system

Good to see labour getting behind calls to fund and expand public transport as we called for in @LabourList last year Motorists need alternatives, not more scaremongering labourlist.org/2023/08/labour…
The message from Yorkshire could not be clearer: Put passengers first and reverse the decline on our public transport the Tories have presided over.
We urgently need to address the North-South rail fare divide by giving passengers in the North the same discount on rail fares as their southern counterparts. That's why we've joined up with @equalitytrust, @SMFthinktank and @Patrick4Dales to call for a Northern Network Railcard.
At the same time, some taxes are holding back our housing market. #Stampduty, for instance, is levied in four out of the five countries surveyed. New Zealand is the only country which doesn’t impose a tax on transactions, and has double the UK’s property sales as % of stock
🏦 The UK has the highest home taxes in the Anglosphere and the burden falls more heavily on low income households Council tax should therefore be reformed, with property values re-evaluated every three years and half of renters’ payments going towards saving for a deposit
We were pleased to launch our new essay collection today on sovereign wealth funds, featuring @dgreen_uk, Eugene O’Callaghan, @JohnPenroseNews, @liambyrnemp, @DrAdam_Dixon, John Crompton, @dagdetter, @SMFthinktank’s Richard Hyde & Hari Menon, and others.
