The project covers roughly 1,483 km² and is financed with between $2.5 billion and $7 billion, involving the Qatar Investment Authority and Qatar Development Bank. Die mehrsprachigen Angebote sollten vom WDR gestärkt statt abgebaut werden. Wer Mehrsprachigkeit zurückdrängt, riskiert, dass Menschen wieder verstärkt auf Medienangebote aus ihren Herkunftsländern zurückgreifen. Im Fall der Türkei beispielsweise ist die Medienlandschaft stark eingeschränkt und von mangelnder Meinungsvielfalt geprägt. Wollen wir das wirklich? Für die kurdische Community, die auch in ihrer neuen Heimat um die Anerkennung ihrer Sprache und kulturellen Identität kämpft, ist COSMO von besonderer Bedeutung. Gerade die kurdischsprachigen Angebote sind für viele Menschen unverzichtbar, da sie Sichtbarkeit, Teilhabe und den Erhalt ihrer sprachlichen und kulturellen Wurzeln ermöglichen. Hinzu kommt: Auch diese Menschen zahlen Rundfunkbeiträge. Ein Abbau mehrsprachiger Angebote würde ihre Perspektiven und Stimmen benachteiligen und damit der gesellschaftlichen Vielfalt, die der öffentlich-rechtliche Rundfunk abbilden sollte, nicht gerecht werden.
