I love my job. However, I hate doing it within the current system. The NHS doesn’t allow the space for any meaningful psychological work for complex and long-term difficulties and I know I’m going to get tired of handing out plasters (read: 6 sessions of CBT).

Telling someone in mental health crisis 'don't cry' isn't useful. It traps the tears inside.
96% of patients dissatisfied w/ their #sleep med successfully switched to the (generally safer) lemborexant (Dayvigo) in industry-funded, open-label study: pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/38460107 When switching from benzos/z-hypnotics, they allowed 2-wk overlap, followed by several wk taper.
Retention in NHS remains such a key issue. Ofc we can try to recruit, but we're not interchangeable 'human resources'- we're people, in relationships with each other & with patients- experiences shared over years, through ups & downs. Important to appreciate each other as people.
re the NHS can you imagine what the figures would be like if the separated mental health services? in fact wouldn't it be a good idea if they did
The combination of widespread exhaustion, seeing the effects of systemic collapse, & knowing the sheer amount of unmet need & distress there is... hard not to be overwhelmed by this at times. There's days when it just feels like paralysis, when all you can do is say it out loud.
@SGV_UK I saw a good talk that said we should choose different antipsychotics for different stages. There were 3 stages: acute - recovery - maintenance I take olanzapine for acute but not for maintenance because of the side effects like being slow and weight gain
When will they learn. Pushing people into work is good for no one's mental health. As a choice, returning to work can be helpful and rewarding when timed right. Coerced, it can contribute to illness and cause relapse. #mentalhealth #DWP

Very good question!
Have your read our 2024 Annual Report? Our key messages sheet summarises findings on some important groups this year: autistic people & pts with ADHD, in-pts <25, students aged 18-21, pts with a one-off assessment &pts who died in public locations #MentalHealth #SuicidePrevention
Only prioritising people for therapy if they are close to work-ready is precisely the reason we got into this mess in the first place.
Many don't realise how isolated severe mental illness can make us. So many in older generations know and are known in the community from day centres where we've been able to be with people without being too with people. The younger ones, post austerity, don't have that even.
‘Nurses are almost gaslighted into thinking it is part of their job to go through traumatic events and then just carry on’ Nurses are at a heightened risk of PTSD, which is why supportive teams and effective trauma management are essential: rcni.com/nursing-standa…
Patients suffer every day because of mental health stigma, especially related to serious mental illness like #schizophrenia and #bipolar disorder. Awareness is sorely needed. We need a government who understand #MentalHealth and don't see it as 'woke nonsense'.

🚨 The Secretary of State for Work and Pensions today said to the Daily Telegraph that "mental health culture has gone too far”. We disagree. We think the rhetoric is misguided. Here’s what we think a government minister should be saying about mental health culture 👇 (1/8)

It is harder than ever to tell who is a qualified mental health professional and who is not. Far too many people on social media selling their clinical services as "psychologists" without professional regulation and training. This petition is very timely, pls check it out⬇️

My ‘bed’ for the night
Had relapse of MH horror. Plus hospitalised for inflamed diverticulitis. Been in Barnet A&E for 20 hours. ‘Slept’ on floor in ED. They found reclining chair at 3am. Am in poor state. But there have been a 1000 kindnesses between suffering patients and extraordinary staff.
I am sick to fucking death of gap analysis’ and taskforces and strategy creation. Endless meetings costing hundreds of pounds leading to 0.00001% progress per year. Patients have been telling you what’s wrong for DECADES and NOTHING CHANGED.
There's a lot of noise about 'transformation' & 'improvement' in NHS. But I think the feeling of making a difference is quieter & behind the scenes- it's the little things at a personal level. The conversation when we heard each other, the word of encouragement that really landed
@aramtiaz This is genuinely why I decided not to pursue the dclin route in the end. Like I think the current system would burn me put so, so bad. And since seeing a psychologist privately I'm realising how much harm I experienced from the system as a whole, not just specific individuals.
I love my job. However, I hate doing it within the current system. The NHS doesn’t allow the space for any meaningful psychological work for complex and long-term difficulties and I know I’m going to get tired of handing out plasters (read: 6 sessions of CBT).
and in the NHS, you’re expected to shove it all back in the closet after only 7-12 sessions!
until you have been at both sides of a psych ward you never know just how big the power imbalance is and how trapped this place can be. struggling lots as a patient when just a few months ago i was a staff on a similar acute ward😔 #nhs #psychward #sectioned
They want me to do adult colouring. Can you send me round the @RITB_ van & get me out of here? Thanks.
Had a few hours peace & quiet to myself today. Went to sit in a nearby churchyard to read a book, & it was really like a noticeable slowing down. Old crooked gravestones, sunshine, spring flowers, flask of tea. It was a relaxing space, made me feel grateful & appreciative.
The school photo story is awful. Our boys have additional needs & arent in school. You get used to feeling separate. In the park today, 2 lads asked to join us playing football. No need for words like inclusion or accessibility. It was just 4 kids kicking a ball. Moved me a lot.
Dont we all need some kind of ‘village’ around us? Just feels like so much of modern life works against nurturing that village. The constant invitation to consume more & chase individual success & independence. Feels shallow. Peace & contentment is in real connection, it's slower

I just had the closest ‘shit I’m dying’ experience I’ve ever had - *thank god* @A37Gnome was here - I choked, he did the back slap thing x3 which shot out the chicken poppers that were blocking my airway out. That was a genuinely terrifying 60 seconds.
You shouldn't only care about disabled people because you may become disabled yourself one day.
@RamblingsMH Yes hope so. There are a lot of errands, esp with young kids, & I find it hard to relax when there I things I need to get done (that's a big trap!). There are ofc joyful moments too. But I think the way I'm seeing so many things as 'demands' tells me I'm near my limits. bw to you
