That feeling when you hear kids being taught to give their all like the widow who gave her last two mites and then went home to die, but John MacArthur blew your mind on the passage’s actual meaning years ago… 😬
"The Lord makes no comment about giving except that she gave more than everybody else relative to what she had. She is not commended. They are not condemned.
No one's attitude or spirit in the giving is discussed. And no principle regarding giving is drawn by our Lord. The narrative is not intended to deal with any of those matters.
The reason the Lord doesn't say anything about it is that's not what it's about. And if you look at the context before and after, this is all about the condemnation of wicked spiritual leaders and a corrupt religious system that is about to be destroyed...
How would you feel if you saw a destitute widow who only had two coins left to buy her food for her next meal give those two coins to a religious system? How would you feel?
You would say, 'Something is wrong with that system when that system takes the last two coins out of a widow's hand.' That's what you would say and you would be right to say that. Giving your last two coins to a false religious system!
How would you feel if you saw a destitute, impoverished person give to her religion her last hope for life to go home perhaps and die? You'd be sick. You'd feel terrible. You would be repulsed.
Any religion that is built on the back of the poor is a false religion. What a sad, misguided, woeful, poor victimized lady. It's tragic, painful.
And I think that's exactly how Jesus saw it, exactly. He saw that corrupt system taking the last two pennies out of a widow's pocket."

That’s Tennessee and Indiana now who have officially declared June as nuclear family month. If you’re a red state governor and you’re not doing this, why not? Do it now. It is time to go on offense.
Today, I proclaimed June as Nuclear Family Month in Indiana.
As a father of four and grandfather of seven, I have seen firsthand the impact that loving, committed families can have across multiple generations. As we approach America’s 250th anniversary, this proclamation
Man’s first sin was doubt. Eve doubted God, believing the serpent. Stop trying to sanctify it. To doubt God or His word is always sin.
Instead of doubting, say, “God, I believe you. Help me to understand, but if I don’t, I won’t bow to the serpent, the father of doubt.”
A Christian's work lies in mourning, self-judging, self-loathing, self-abhorring, and in repenting and reforming, and in fresh and frequent exercises of faith on the Lord Jesus, on his blood, on his promises, and on his free rich sovereign and glorious grace, that is displayed and offered in the gospel, and in a patient waiting upon the Lord.
O sirs! when poor Christians are bewildered, their proper work is to cast themselves upon the promises, to trust in the name of the Lord, and to stay themselves upon their God.

The OLD WAVE for young men: drink tons of alcohol, abuse your body, have zero discipline, get bad sleep, ignore God and the good of your soul, chase girls, avoid children and commitment, seek fast money, have a non-committal relationship with the church, chase plastic joy on screens and pads and tablets, prey on the innocent for temporary pleasure, quickly divorce if she doesn't make you happy, and generally live a non-substantive life based in partying and excess and things that fade.
The NEW WAVE for young men: pursue Christ and the good of your soul, study the Word daily, pray often, get in shape, eat well, exercise often, take care of your body, embrace discipline, get good sleep, fight for purity, seek marriage if called to it, build a vocation over the long haul, hold fast to your wife through thick and thin, tenderly invest in your kids, serve your church by any means necessary, disciple a man younger than you, risk your life to protect the innocent, and generally live a substantive life based in truth and hope and the permanent things by the power of the gospel.
The Bible was written on three continents:
Asia
Africa
Europe
In multiple languages:
Hebrew
Aramaic
Greek
Through more than 40 human authors:
Prophets
Kings
Shepherds
Fishermen
A physician
And yet, from Genesis to Revelation, it tells one unified story:
The Redemption of Mankind through Jesus Christ
Scripture is breathtaking.
Ben Sasse is dying in public, and his advice hits hard. I've been thinking about it a lot:
He wishes he had honored the Sabbath more. He didn’t skip church but was consistently tempted to excuse work in the afternoon. “I wish I’d treated the Lord’s Day differently over the course of my life.” He added that he wishes he had guarded better against “digital intrusions into the Sabbath.”
Family dinnertime should be prioritized. “Dinnertime is precious,” he said. “Man, lock up your devices and keep them away from the table and prioritize that time.”
He advises parents to put a limit on work travel—something that, especially as a senator, he did often. “There is a limit to how many trips a month are really worth it,” he reflected. “I lived a road warrior life for a long time, and I kind of had a rule of thumb that seven nights a month at a hotel was the ceiling, but boy, there’s a difference between seven and nine, and there’s a difference between seven and five, and I took way too many trips.” (That one hits particularly hard for me as I travel a lot for work.)
People should live in “thick communities”—especially, if possible, near family. “Family compounds,” Sasse said. “Like, have more cousins and figure out how to live thick with them. There are so many times when we optimize around things that are not nearly as important as family thickness. Boy, I wish we lived down the block from my folks.” If he had more time, he said, he would be brainstorming how to create a family compound with his own children and their families.

@RevJaredJones Why are you minimizing something like a doctrine that is teaching people that they must not crucify this particular sinful desire as something political??
The fact of the matter is Allberry was teaching a destructive doctrine directly related to the sin that has disqualified

A paraphrase of John 3:16, from John Owen:
“‘God,’ — the Father,
‘so loved,’ — had such a peculiar, transcendent love, being an unchangeable purpose and act of his will concerning their salvation, towards
‘the world,’ — miserable, sinful, lost men of all sorts, not only Jews but Gentiles also, which he peculiarly loved,
‘that,’ — intending their salvation, as in the last words, for the praise of his glorious grace,
‘he gave,’ — he prepared a way to prevent their everlasting destruction, by appointing and sending
‘his only-begotten Son’ — to be an all-sufficient Saviour to all that look up unto him,
‘that whosoever believeth in him,’ — all believers whatsoever, and only they,
‘should not perish, but have everlasting life,’ — and so effectually be brought to the obtaining of those glorious things through him which the Lord in his free love had designed for them.”

With a mixture of sorrow and rejoicing, we mark the passing from the church militant to the church triumphant of Dr. Albert N. Martin, a beloved friend, faithful pastor, and valiant soldier in the army of King Jesus, who died yesterday on the
I'm going to keep posting this Alstair Begg clip "The Man on the Middle Cross" (less than four minutes in length) every Holy Week, because its message is true in 2026, it will be true in 2036 and it will be true in 3036.
"If i take my eyes off the cross, I can then give only lip service to its efficacy while at the same time living as if my salvation depends upon me.
And as soon as you go there it will lead you either to abject despair or a horrible kind of arrogance.
And it is only the cross of Christ that deals both with the dreadful depths of despair and the pretentious arrogance of the pride of man that says you know, I can figure this out."
This never gets old … John MacArthur explains the greatest gospel verse in the Bible:
2 Corinthians 5:21 - “For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.”
“If I died right now, I have great assurance of being reconciled. Why? Because 2,000 years ago the Son of God died in the place of this wretched sinner.”
-Paul Washer
