Leftists too often naturalize class consciousness. They treat workers as if they already exist as a unified political subject, then explain every failure of solidarity as the result of ideology, prejudice, false consciousness, or manipulation. But class consciousness has to be produced. People do not automatically understand their interests primarily through class, and they are not politically incomplete when they organize themselves through other relationships.
