With all the conversations around the sad decline of San Francisco (and California), surprisingly silent was the role of UCSF played in all this. UCSF literally run SFGH (I refuse to call it zSFGH). The relationship between UCSF and the city’s public health department is quite public. UCSF provides legitimacy to all the idealogically driven policies by producing “evidence,” via shallow scientific consideration. So, why journalists (both institutional and citizens) don’t mention and investigate them? When journalists collectively and uniformly do not report certain thing, they are not ignorant. It is a collective action. I think some are part of “controlled” opposition, not real journalists. Are you one of them?

We need to bring algebra back to middle school in San Francisco. I know that sounds strange. Most school districts teach basic algebra by the 8th grade. But not here. My ballot measure calls for ending our failed algebra experiment. If a kid likes math, we need to encourage it! San Francisco stopped offering 8th grade algebra because some kids weren’t ready for it. Our solution was to make everyone wait until the 9th grade. This was a huge mistake. A study by Stanford University proved the policy didn’t help the kids who were behind in math. All we’ve done the past decade is hold back kids who love math. And we lost many of these kids when their parents pulled them out of public school. We need to end this failed algebra experiment. We need to better prepare all students for algebra — and not punish kids who can handle it earlier. That’s why I introduced a ballot measure today urging our public schools to let kids take algebra by the 8th grade. Why does 8th grade algebra matter? Every resident of San Francisco should care about this because well-run public schools are essential for a city to function and thrive. We have a tale of two school systems in San Francisco. Private schools are growing and public school enrollment is declining. This reduces school district revenues, which are based on the number of enrolled students. And this makes it more difficult to provide what students and teachers need. A quarter of San Francisco’s kids attend private school, compared to only nine percent in California. A policy against 8th grade algebra is a big factor when families decide to leave public schools. Families also leave San Francisco entirely. They leave for many reasons: cost of housing, quality of life — and schools. We have the lowest percentage of children among major U.S. cities. It’s often said San Francisco has more dogs than kids, and that’s a problem. San Francisco’s future depends on keeping families here. This starts with treating parents like partners and offering the courses and programs that will make parents want to choose public schools — especially the parents stretching themselves to pay for private tuition. The Board of Supervisors does not have control over the school district. Our schools are governed by an independently elected school board. But every resident of San Francisco is our constituent, including parents and students. Their voices deserve to be heard. That’s why I am introducing through the Board of Supervisors a declaration of policy for the March 2024 ballot. It urges the school district to offer Algebra 1 to students by the 8th grade and to develop a math curriculum that prioritizes excellence for students at all grade levels. I want to thank the co-sponsors of the measure: Supervisors Safai, Melgar, Stefani and Dorsey. Thanks to the advocacy of many parents, the school district has launched a committee tasked with bringing algebra back to the 8th grade. This is great. But there is no guarantee what this committee will determine. Many parents have seen how school district committees have gone off the rails. That’s why the ballot measure is important. Hey @google. Why are you selling google play giftcards, accepting the code, and then denying release the money. I kept getting error messages that my play balance can only be used in U.S.?
