Another example for clarity: Fundamental field: Science Sub Field: Neuroscience. Of course you an always specify further and combine. Animal neurology, for example. This way you're adding depth and breadth simultaneously.

The alternative is to specialize in one domain for 5-10. years. Not everyone is neurologically wired for this, however. but depth is critical too. For example: Pick a fundamental field and sub field in this specialization. Fundamental: Art Sub-Field: Sci-fi Concept art.

For polymaths to become seen as skillful They must -specialize- in each field they undertake. Don't play in 101 genres of music. Combine 2-5. Don't work in 101 art styles. Combine 10 or so influences into your 1-3 styles. Study 20 fields. Combine 3 of them exquisitely.
