Why was the Climate Change Act such an important moment of UK leadership? Why did it happen when it did? And what were the politics that made it possible? Listen to Ep7 with @bryworthington who was at the heart of the story. Find it via this link: political-heat.captivate.fm
“#Climate is context: it is something that shapes everything we are trying to achieve” - @camillaborn on international #diplomacy in this week’s episode of Political Heat. Listen wherever you get your podcasts: political-heat.captivate.fm

me for @ConversationUK on what's next for UK climate targets, & the urgent need to align with local plans, economic strategy & the planning system theconversation.com/the-uks-climat…
Incoming boss of @COP29_AZ outlined 2 pillars for the summit in Berlin today... (i) clean plans to keep 1.5C within reach and (ii) squeezing out cash to deliver. Pretty ambitious but with 2024 slated to be hottest on record, needed.
“I always describe COPs as confidence tricks. You have to build momentum and confidence into them, and momentum and confidence out of them” - @camillaborn on how to host a global climate conference political-heat.captivate.fm

“It continues to baffle me how influential the UK is on international climate. It’s watched from all across the world. The decisions we make really affect the confidence in other countries about whether the transition is happening” (1)

🚨Last year was the hottest on record. Britain urgently needs to decarbonise our infrastructure. But how can we both reach net zero and support low-to-middle income households? 1/x
Recommended listen: A podcast by the @guardian spoke to 76-year-old Elisabeth Stern, part of a 2,400-strong group of senior Swiss women who won a landmark climate case last week in the European court for human rights. 🗣️ @hansermoore @Isabella_Kam buff.ly/3xQnSQ8
The UK’s emissions are now 53% below 1990 levels, while GDP has grown by 82% - don't anyone try to tell me decoupling emissions from the economy is impossible. And no, it's not because of imports: the collapse of primary industry was largely over by 2000. carbonbrief.org/analysis-uk-em…
We can do this, and we will definitely have to do some building. Could do a lot more, a lot cheaper if we understood and utilised existing grid capacity better. This is why distributed flexibility is so key, but unfortunately structure of price control doesn't incentivize flex.
“To deliver cheaper energy bills, economic benefits, and net zero, we need to build something like seven times the infrastructure in the next ten years on the grid than we’ve built over the previous three decades” (2)
2 stories on the news: 1. Scotland not introducing enough policies to deliver clean tech and other measures for their climate targets 2. Anxiety about China (and others) ruthlessly subsidising clean tech and thus dominating the future global economy Writes itself really.
Could not have been prouder to hear our wonderful CEO Kate on @BBCr4today this morning talking about the importance of trees in urban places and how we need more of them, spread more fairly, to make cities fit for the future.
Great to hear our CEO Kate Sheldon speak live on @BBCr4today this morning about the stark inequality of UK urban tree coverage and how we are leading positive change on a national scale. You can catch Kate speaking on @BBCSounds now or listen here: bbc.co.uk/programmes/m00…
Good news (& good pun) that DEFRA laid hedge regulations today. But they only replace rules lost when EU agriculture policy was ditched. Alongside better payments for wildlife-friendly farming, stronger regulation & enforcement are needed to reduce pollution & support wildlife.
Legislation to protect hedgerows has been laid in both Houses of Parliament today. If approved it will put baseline hedgerow management practices into law, providing a consistent approach across all people operating on agricultural land. defrafarming.blog.gov.uk/2024/04/16/lay…
All the short-term noise & culture-war stuff around energy is obscuring the fact that humanity is transitioning into a new era of clean energy abundance. It's amazing & thrilling! We just need to get there before we fuck the planet up too badly. </fin>
Such a good thread this. Very succinctly explains what should be obvious about the future of energy and the dominance of renewables, and yet is so rarely understood.
One of the main reasons renewable energy is going to triumph in the end is, IMO, not well understood by the general populace, so here's a quick 🧵on it. Over time, the price of fossil fuels is determined by two forces pulling in opposite directions. On one hand ...

It was such a pleasure to chat to @ASmallAMount for her new podcast. A forty minute gallop through democratic innovations, coal mines and the inside of MPs' brains.

A fascinating obituary for an extraordinary palaeobotanist: Estella Bergere Leopold. 'She argued that the value of a place was partly the result of its ecological history and how environmental events shape it.' Yes yes yes! nature.com/articles/d4158…
a good sign your country is too centralised: local elections are treated as a national story and a verdict on a national government.
Really excited to join @SteveReedMP's team. It's a critical moment for nature, for farmers, and for rural communities. After 14 years of neglect and broken promises, our countryside deserves better
