Took in a ballgame recently and kept thinking about the kids I coach. First time coaching summer baseball. Here’s what nobody tells you about coaching kids: they’re not listening to your speeches. They’re watching whether you show up. The Tuesday it’s 97 degrees. The Saturday after a brutal week. The practice where nothing works and the drills fall apart. Every kid on that field knows I could just wind this down. Plenty of adults in their lives already have. But the kids still want to ball and have fun. So the job isn’t teaching them to hit. The job is being the guy who keeps showing up until they stop checking whether you will. Dads don’t become unstoppable when life gets easier. They become unstoppable when quitting stops being an option. Turns out coaches work the same way.
