@pickover Is anyone else thrown off by the mathematician emerging from the cave? Is that where we mathematicians supposedly live? Also, a slip of paper can't have an infinite grid of points with integer coordinates. Fun question, but strange set-up.

@virtualcourtney As an added challenge, you can try to use all six numbers and finish so that the target number is in the upper left position. I don't know if it's always possible, but definitely most of the time.

@TheMathGuru Forcing students to use y=mx+b makes them think other forms are wrong. Point-slope form is easier and more useful. When using a tangent line to approximate a function, we care what happens near the tangent point, not x=0. Point-slope form also generalizes to Taylor polynomials.
