The Brother’s Home, a "welfare" facility in the 1970s, exploited 38,000 marginalized people through forced labor, abuse, and corruption. It has been called South Korea's Concentration Camp. While the popular TV series doesn’t explicitly reference Brother's Home, it certainly drums up some similarities that cannot be denied. Here’s a breakdown: The Real-Life Horrors Behind Squid Game: South Korea's Brother's Home South Korea's Squid Game captivated the world with its harrowing portrayal of human desperation, inequality, and exploitation. But did you know that a chilling real-life event mirrors these themes? The story of South Korea's Brother's Home, a welfare facility turned nightmare, reveals the brutal realities that inspired the show's commentary on societal injustice. What Was the Brother's Home? The Brother's Home, established in Busan during the 1970s, was a government-sponsored facility intended to house and rehabilitate homeless individuals and other marginalized people. However, it became infamous for its human rights abuses. Police indiscriminately rounded up street vendors, disabled people, orphans, and even political dissenters under government directives to "clean up" the streets and present a polished image of South Korea as it pursued modernization. Between the 1970s up until its closure in 1987, over 38,000 people were detained in the facility. Many were not homeless but forcibly taken, often without reason, and subjected to unimaginable horrors. The Horrors Inside the Brother's Home * Forced Labor: Detainees were made to work under grueling conditions, generating profit for the facility's operators. * Physical and Sexual Abuse: Survivors recounted beatings, torture, and systemic sexual violence. * Deaths: Officially, 551 people died, but the real number is believed to be much higher. Many were buried secretly in unmarked graves. * Corruption: The facility’s leaders manipulated records to inflate the number of detainees and secure greater government funding, profiting at the expense of human suffering. The Brother's Home became a symbol of exploitation and systemic failure, revealing the government's willingness to sacrifice its most vulnerable for economic progress and social control. The Connection to Squid Game Inmates were forced to participate in brutal punishments euphemistically called "games." These included violent activities such as the "motor vehicle game," where detainees were hit in the eye until bruised, and the "Hiroshima game," where they were hung upside down for extended periods. This grim gamification of abuse draws a direct parallel to the deadly competitions in Squid Game in which contestants are all financially burdened and deeply in debt, which serves as a key motivator for their participation in the deadly competition. Each contestant has unique financial struggles, but they share the common desperation to escape their dire situations and and up paying with their lives. In Squid Game, 454 out of 456 contestants were killed. Officially, 551 people were recorded on record as dying in Brother's Home. The Aftermath and Ongoing Implications Even decades later, the shadow of the Brother's Home continues to loom. Survivors demand justice, calling for those connected to the atrocities to be held accountable. Park In-keun is the man who ruled the facility with an iron fist. However, I don't think his children were involved with their parents' crimes and therefore they shouldn't be punished for what they did not do. Park In-keun's reign over the Brother's Home was likened to a dictatorship. Under the pretense of providing welfare services, the facility kidnapped individuals off the streets to boost its inmate numbers and embezzle government funds. Some detainees, like Choi Seung-woo, were schoolchildren falsely accused of petty crimes. Choi was enslaved, beaten, and raped for five years, a fate shared by countless others. In 1987, Park was charged with embezzlement and illegal confinement but served just two and a half years in prison. He later resumed his welfare business under a different name. Though he died in 2015, survivors continue to fight for justice, urging Korea's truth and reconciliation commission to investigate fully and hold accomplices accountable. A Reflection on Society's Most Vulnerable The Brother's Home and Squid Game both serve as stark critiques of societal systems that exploit the most vulnerable. They force us to confront uncomfortable truths about how marginalized groups are treated, even in modern societies, and challenge us to ask: How far have we really come in protecting those at the edges of society? As Squid Game draws global attention to these issues, the story of the Brother’s Home reminds us that these are not just fictional narratives.
