I just returned from leading my first pilgrimage through Croatia and will be returning around this time next year. This was my 167th group pilgrimage since I started The Catholic Traveler nearly 20 years ago. Next up, back to back sold out Fatima - Lourdes pilgrimages.
Who’s in Rome next week (Tuesday, 30 April). I may have something exciting for you to do.
Joke? I think Rome is too crowded and that people would be better off waiting until it’s not so crowded. No one has an enjoyable experience in crowds like this. I care more about the quality of my groups than quantity.

Rome is full. Stay home. This is the line for Saint Peter’s Basilica at 7 AM today. The last few months have been getting more and more crowded. Each day busier than I’ve experienced in twenty years. I imagine it will somehow continue to get worse until the end of 2025.
Gotta admit, I’m a little jealous of the millions of people who were just introduced to Patti Smith. ♥️
Flying from Europe’s best airport (FCO) is so much more pleasant than the US. Keep your shoes on. Keep your electronics in your bag. Bring full size liquids. Bring your drinks. This is the future. And also the past. I like it.
Jordan closing its airspace means that any potential attacks to Israel from Iran will have to take the long way around and could only hit the extreme north or south borders.

I’ve been doing this for 25 years. This is the longest Papal Audience line I’ve ever seen. All four entry points were like this today. The crowds in Rome this year are crazy.

@MountainButorac I remember my first visit to Rome, in June 1992. You could walk into almost anywhere without waiting. Maybe the Vatican Museums required half an hour without any reservation. The Sistine Chapel was almost empty at 9 AM. It seems like a dream.
@MountainButorac It’s on my wishlist & I’d prefer not to plan next year’s trip until I know for certain. Alternately, I can plan the trip to include Turin and just pray the Shroud is on display at the end of April or in early May next year (the usual time we travel).
@NCRonline I’m thankful & feel connected to fellow Catholics I’ve met in Italy, Ireland, Poland, the Holy Land. One of our great priests is Nigerian. More odd NCR division but to what end?

Before Mass, our Director of Liturgical Music spoke, asking us NOT to applaud after the recessional hymn. She appreciates the gesture but feels it’s inappropriate for the Mass & makes her feel uncomfortable. She asked to be thanked privately or that a prayer be made. I like her!
