Not because vaccines cause autism. Not because more kids are being made autistic. But because more autistic kids are surviving long enough to be identified.
Most autistic people are actually multiply disabled. Kids with a host of other conditions have higher rates of autism, too. If widespread vaccination is keeping more of those kids alive beyond early childhood, you are going to wind up with marginally more autistic people.
MOSTLY I think we are just better at diagnosing it. Diagnostic rates for girls and people of color are still catching up to what white boys' have been. But also...
I actually have a tiny little bit of a theory that the increase in autism is at least partly due to vaccines...but not for the reasons anybody thinks. (Spoiler alert for anyone getting scared at this point: vaccines don't cause autism, vaccines cause adults.)
Autism rates have increased because we’ve become better at diagnosing it. It has nothing to do with vaccinations, you morons.
