The idea that sexual abuse of women and children comes primarily from strangers helps to conceal the horror and betrayal of the reality that it actually comes primarily from loved ones.

I think this is also partly why people latch onto a vision of sexual violence that centers around glamorous, rich men who systematize their monstrosity, like Epstein and Weinstein: they’re so unlike the men who are most likely to rape you, the men you know.
This does not mean, as some people assume it does, that sexual abuse is not as common, not as harmful, or not as worthy of anger and fear.
@MoiraDonegan And preschool teachers, babysitters, clergy, coaches.
@MoiraDonegan Facts. Transphobes also hate it when you explain to them that child predators are much more likely to gain access from being a family member or trusted family friend than from being a random queer person. It's not about reality for many people, unfortunately.
@MoiraDonegan @jbouie We had this hysteria in the 80’s on missing children. Reality is the vast vast majority of children are taken by non-custodial parents or grandparents.
@MoiraDonegan @Dianthrax Unfortunately this has been the belief for a long time. 50 years ago when I told my mother and aunt (moments after it happened, I was 5) that my uncle had raped me, they told me I didn’t know what I was talking about. 15 years after that he confesssed.
@MoiraDonegan When outsiders do it, it’s a horrendous crime worthy of death. When insiders do it it’s a sin maybe…but we are all sinners…they deserve forgiveness…maybe the victim led him on….maybe she’s lying….no need to involve the law, cover it up & move on. Conservatism in action!
@MoiraDonegan From experience I can say I've never been sexually assaulted by a stranger. Unfortunately, sibling, spouse, trusted friend, they were my abusers. It's not the stranger in the bushes we need to be afraid of. It's the people who are supposed to love us.
@MoiraDonegan @j_n_foster Conservative fetish is to rambo the bad guys. They are people who believe they are censored. I did not choose to hear the story multiple times in multiple places.
