10 reasons to add grid-scale battery storage globally:

1) Ramp Rates
Batteries reach full output in under a second and can instantly reverse direction, making them more effective at tracking daily solar ramps.

Battery's Ancillary Service → Energy Trading shift, done two different ways: Texas vs. the UK
Batteries switch to energy trading once a market's Ancillary Service products are saturated
In Texas, this new meta means performing fewer, deeper discharges to alleviate congestion during scarcity events
This is why the shift to energy trading has resulted in discharge depth rising 16 → 32%, while the fleet continues to average 0.8 cycles/day
But in the UK, the lack of price spikes means batteries rely on consistently shifting larger volumes of energy instead
And so, in the GB market, the shift to energy trading has resulted in cycling rising 0.5 → 1.2
The same phenomenon, but two different operational strategies

Four-hour batteries dominate New York’s queue — 86% of new projects.
The Index Storage Credit, which mainly compensates 4-hour systems, is a key factor behind the buildout.
But as needs shift, longer durations could gain ground.

What happens when it rains in California?
Solar gen crashes from 150GWh on the typical October day to just 20GWh this past Saturday. Gas, imports, and even BESS (!) had to step into the daytime gap
Two economic engines, but the physics stay the same.
Once solar floods the system, the need for batteries scales fast
California got there earlier via targets and incentives; Texas arrived via strong price signals

New York's grid-scale energy storage solicitation has ~19 GW of eligible projects to choose from and only ~1 GW of Storage Credits to award. The Strike Prices these projects submit will be make-or-break.
At @ModoEnergy we've laid out how developers will be thinking about their submissions and where we expect bids to land.

Oklahoma is quietly becoming SPP's battery capital.
(1) The state holds 2.3 GW of late-stage battery development. That's 44% of SPP's late-stage pipeline, more than Kansas, Texas, and Nebraska combined.
(2) Developers are clustering in Southern SPP, where surplus interconnection sites, stronger renewable overlap, rising demand, and transmission upgrades are strengthening the value proposition for BESS.

Truly remarkable: Poland used to be a climate laggard.
Today, wind and solar are increasingly replacing coal in the Polish electricity mix with almost 30% of all electricity generated to date this year from wind and solar.
In 2000 coal provided 95% of Polish electricity.
Today it is at 51%.
Could New York have 4 GW of grid-scale batteries by 2030?
It'll likely require an expansion of the Index Storage Credit program, and some streamlining of the current interconnection process.
But it's certainly feasible.
Gas outages in Texas are averaging 15 GW this November as ERCOT enters maintenance season
Normally, the lack of dispatchable generation risks scarcity price events - but the 7 GW of BESS capacity added since last year is cannibalizing peak prices from $107 → $75/MWh

In 2010, New York's first 20 MW battery was commissioned in Westover, NY.
It augmented a 90+ year old coal plant - there are architecture plans dated to 1917!
Now, almost 20 GW of standalone storage is in the queue. Wild how fast New York’s grid flipped.

Huge short-term data centre demand growth is coming in Australia's NEM.

Good news: more than 50% of the world’s economies have seen carbon emissions from fossil fuel power generation peaking. And with the speed of change in the electricity sector many more will join this growing list in coming years.
California's midday solar generation averaged 17.8 GW last month - plummeting power prices below zero, but only in the South
This is normal for CAISO, and it happens because:
(A) transmission constraints along Path 15 (California's biggest grid chokepoint) prevents excess solar energy from being transported North
(B) and the excess supply - coupled with the fact that some solar sites will continue to produce power at negative prices - pushes wholesale energy prices below zero
Batteries then respond to this price signal, charging when energy is inexpensive, and help shift excess supply into the evening
