Wrong. All these responses are so disingenuous. They evade the actual question by deploying a checklist of antizionist buzzwords: settler-colonialism, apartheid, ethnocracy, Jewish supremacy, decolonization, right of return. The purpose is obvious: make the desired conclusion sound ethically inevitable while avoiding the actual question. What does “dismantling Israel” actually mean? Dismantled by whom? Through what process? Against the consent of its citizens? By what lawful mechanism? International law provides no recognized pathway for outsiders to abolish an existing sovereign UN member state against the will of its people and government, all in the name of “equality.” Israel has a permanent population, functioning institutions, effective government, territory over which it exercises sovereignty, and the capacity to enter relations with other states. Those are the standard criteria for statehood under the Montevideo Convention. Israel also enjoys the same rights to territorial integrity and self-defence as any other state. That’s international law 101. Now, jus in bello, the body of law regulating conduct in armed conflict, does not change this. It imposes obligations on parties to a conflict and, where applicable, on an occupying power. It protects civilians. It regulates military conduct. It does not dissolve the underlying sovereignty of the state involved, and it does not create a legal right to erase that state. Gaza and the West Bank raise serious, separate legal and political questions: Hamas governance in Gaza since 2007, Oslo-era divisions in the West Bank, Israeli military control in certain areas, Palestinian Authority administration in others, settlement policy, security concerns, terrorism, rejectionism, refugee claims, and disputed claims to sovereignty. These issues while complex are also not legal authority to abolish Israel proper. We can have rigorous debates about settlement policy, military administration, Palestinian statehood, secure borders, constitutional safeguards or lack thereof, leadership failures, violent political Islam, and the violence that has perpetuated suffering on both sides. But “dismantling Israel” is not a policy proposal within those debates. It is an antizionist euphemism that typically envisions replacing the Jewish state with a different political entity across the entire territory. Historical precedents offer no support for unilateral external dismantlement. The Ottoman Empire disintegrated after military defeat and treaty. Yugoslavia fractured through war, ethnic cleansing, secession, and eventual recognition of successor states. Czechoslovakia dissolved by mutual political agreement. East Germany merged into the Federal Republic through consent and treaty. South Africa ended apartheid as a legal system through internal transition. The state itself continued. None of these examples authorize the international community to erase a sovereign state against the wishes of its citizens. This has nothing to do with Israel being uniquely immune to criticism or reform. It is about Israel not being uniquely disposable. If the goal is equal rights, negotiated borders, Palestinian self-determination, or an end to occupation consistent with Israel’s legitimate security realities, those positions can be argued openly and honestly. But there is no serious conversation to have while Palestinian and self-described “Pro-Palestinian” maximalism treats Jewish sovereignty as a problem to be eliminated. Proponents of “dismantling Israel” offer no lawful mechanism or honest answer for what happens when millions of Israelis withhold consent to a wishful Kumbaya state imposed against their will, in a region where violent political Islam, rejectionism, and UNRWA’s broken inherited-refugee system are not theoretical risks. I am a lawyer, not a geopolitical expert. But I do not need to be one to recognize equality language being used to launder the elimination of Jewish collective rights.
