Virtually every first world country has a declining birth rate. The people living in the most prosperous countries in history are acting like having children is too expensive and choosing to forgo it entirely. Not because they can’t afford children, but because having children might affect the lifestyle they’ve become accustomed to. Abortion is not about economic necessity; it is about convenience. The decline in religion didn’t just change what people believe about God. It changed what people believe about sacrifice, family, duty, and children. The result is a culture increasingly unwilling to trade comfort for the next generation.

My daughter was supposed to have a life threatening heart condition. Doctors pushed for us to abort her. We were told that if she survived at all she would have a painful and expensive life. She was born with no such condition and I am currently at her dance recital waiting for it to begin. Doctors are far from infallible. Killing a child because of predictions made by people who are frequently wrong is short sighted. Any child can develop a serious illness, suffer a catastrophic injury, or require lifelong care. There are people without Down syndrome who will ultimately need far more support than some people with Down syndrome. We do not kill these people. There are also numerous government programs, charities, and community resources that help families care for children with disabilities. I do not believe a person’s right to live should depend on whether caring for them may be difficult or expensive.

Having any child is a lifetime of worry. Having a child with Down syndrome can also be a lifetime of joy. A study led by researchers at Harvard Medical School found that nearly 99% of surveyed people with Down syndrome reported being happy with their lives. The same research found overwhelmingly positive responses from family members, with 99% of parents saying they loved their child with Down syndrome and 97% of siblings saying they were proud of their sibling. Compared to surveys of the general population, those levels of reported life satisfaction are remarkably high.

The commandment isn’t “don’t kill.” It’s “You shall not murder.” Scripture never treats killing a spider as morally equivalent to killing a human being. The actual question is whether the unborn are human beings. Biology confirms they are. Thus abortion is murder, even when the law refuses to recognize it as such. Likewise, “judge not” is constantly misused. No Christian should be declaring that a specific person is going to hell. That judgment belongs to God alone. But saying abortion is morally wrong is not judging someone’s soul. It’s judging an action. Those are two completely different things. In fact, Jesus said, “Judge righteous judgment” (John 7:24).

This child, with an extra chromosome, is valuable and worthy of life.

‼️MY REACTION TO @McJuggerNuggets TURNING HIS ABORTION DECISION INTO CONTENT: The one thing missing from the discussion was the person. The child. The human being at the center of it all. And I couldn't stop thinking about something. What would a person with Down syndrome think reading that tweet? Having children is one of the most selfless acts a human being can undertake. You are voluntarily accepting uncertainty. The entire journey of parenthood is an exercise in loving someone whose future you cannot control. That's the deal. But somewhere along the way we've started treating children like consumer products. We ask whether the child fits our plans. Whether the child matches our expectations. Whether the child will provide the experience we envisioned. And when a diagnosis arrives that changes those expectations, the conversation often becomes about whether the child still meets the standard. That isn't parenthood. That's consumerism. And then there is one final thing I can't shake. The need to announce it. Not to close friends. Not to family. To the entire world. To a bunch of strangers online. Maybe that's the part that disturbs me most. Because we've entered a strange moment in our culture. Every private experience must become content. Every tragedy becomes a post. Every intimate decision becomes engagement. Every deeply personal moment becomes public consumption. And I found myself wondering: Was today the day that aborting your child became content? As Christians, we believe every person is made in the image of God. Every person. Join me tonight in praying for both this couple, and the sweet soul that they sent to Heaven way too early.

Here is a non exhaustive list of diseases that disproportionately effect black ppl: Hypertension, stroke, type 2 diabetes, chronic kidney disease, heart failure, sickle cell disease, prostate cancer, colorectal cancer, multiple myeloma, lupus, HIV/AIDS, asthma, pregnancy related complications, maternal mortality, infant mortality, end stage renal disease, peripheral artery disease, glaucoma, sarcoidosis, uterine fibroids, obesity, sleep apnea, and vascular dementia. They also have much greater odds than even the average white person to both be murdered and/or be a murderer, let alone someone with downs. And that’s before you even factor in the racism you’re so scared of.
