I was very lucky to grow up near the Wedge A formative experience for me as a kid was sitting on the sand during the Hurricane Linda swell in 1997 Easily 30+ foot faces and just an unbelievable amount of energy in the ocean (bigger than this video) A middle aged lady was walking on the sand up the berm, not paying attention About 1 inch of water rushed up and it completely knocked her off her feet The swell had taken a huge amount of sand out to sea so the berm was at a >30 degree angled pitch Within about two seconds she was in the impact zone Lifeguards ran in, saved her, and got her out the backside where the lifeguard boat was waiting It’s one of the ~5 brief moments from my childhood that’s most seared into my brain The ocean is powerful
