While attending the London Defence Conference, I sat down with the conference's director, Iain Martin (@iainmartin1). We discussed a range of issues: UK's role in stopping the genocide in Kosova, our economic boom, Russia’s threat to our country, the EU, and NATO, hybrid warfare, and our strengthening defense capabilities.
One theme kept surfacing: when Russia acts with a 19th-century mindset, history offers both a warning and a guide.

Highlights #LDC2026
Day 1 of the London Defence Conference continued with Air Chief Marshal Sir Richard Knighton’s introduction, welcoming the Chiefs of Defence (CHODs) from all 10 Joint Expeditionary Force nations and Canada, gathered under one roof at the LDC.
Air Chief Marshal Sir Richard Knighton said in his address:
“Our principal threat here in the UK, in our own backyard, comes from Russia. I’m grateful to LDC for inviting me, and to the JEF Chiefs of Defence for being here. In parallel with this conference, we will be holding the JEF CHODs meeting.
When the Joint Expeditionary Force started, not all members were NATO members; now all of them are. The significance of JEF has grown, not diminished. It has grown as the threat has changed and geopolitics have moved on.
Our purpose as JEF is to support and secure NATO’s deterrence objectives.”
He added that LDC provides an opportunity to share ideas, challenge one another, and expressed his gratitude to the organisers.

Highlights from #LDC2026
Day 1 of the @LondonDefConf continued with a Keynote Conversation: The Rt Hon @JohnHealey_MP , Secretary of State for Defence, in conversation with LDC Director @iainmartin1
The conversation covered questions on UK defence spending, the delayed Defence Investment Plan, and whether Britain is ready for the challenges ahead.
Healey cited the UK's recent operation to expose Russia's secret submarine activity, in which 500 UK personnel were deployed, pilots flew 450 hours, and frigates covered several thousand nautical miles to track, deter, and call out what Putin was doing.
Healey claimed this offered clear reassurance to the public that, even amid the Middle East conflict, the UK has not taken its eyes off Russia. “We can track, deter and respond,” said Healey.
