Dolly led the melody with her clear, pure tone that still carried the breath of the Appalachian mountains. Emmylou Harris added delicate high notes, while Linda Ronstadt brought depth and emotional weight. Together they created a harmony that made the already melancholic song feel both aching and graceful. The song tells of longing for someone who has passed, and of the wish to rest beneath a weeping willow. In their voices, that old story was no longer just lyrics. One of my favorite rare Dolly performances is this cover of Barbra Streisand’s “The Way We Were” from her 1976–77 variety show. Filmed at Cheekwood in Nashville, the footage shows Dolly with Carl Dean, her husband of nearly 60 years, who died in 2025. Today, it breaks my heart.

MTV’s Unplugged series was a real test for the musicians of that era. Sure, you sound huge wired up to stacks of amps with distortion and effects stacked on top of each other. But can you do it in a small room, up close to the audience, without all the gear to hide behind? Stripped naked of the electricity.
