That’s what’s happening to Vilma Palacios. She’s 22 years old. She came to the U.S. as a child, applied for asylum, has no criminal record, and had just graduated from LSU’s School of Nursing when ICE arrested her during a routine vehicle inspection. She had accepted a job at a New Orleans hospital. Instead, she was taken to an ICE detention center in Louisiana. She has now been held for six months. Not because she’s dangerous. Not because she committed a crime. But because confinement works as pressure, especially when it’s indefinite and punishing. Vilma has described being held in crowded dorms, denied access to her personal belongings, and waiting days, sometimes a week, for basic hygiene items like menstrual products. This is a civil immigration process, not a criminal one. Under normal circumstances, someone with a pending legal case, prior work authorization, and no criminal history would not be jailed at all, let alone for months. But detention itself is now being used as the punishment. When people are isolated, stripped of control, and left with no timeline for release, many will agree to leave just to make it stop. That’s not voluntary deportation. That’s coercion. This should alarm everyone. If ICE can bypass the courts by making conditions unbearable, then due process doesn’t just fail… it’s being weaponized.
