GPS pioneer and mathematician Gladys West has died. She was 95. Her calculations helped produce extremely accurate modeling of the Earth's shape, laying the foundation for modern global positioning system technology. West was born in rural Virginia during segregation. In 1956, she was hired as a computer programmer at a Navy base in Virginia, where she was one of only four Black employees. Her work went largely unrecognized for years, though she was later acknowledged as one of the hidden figures of the era. Despite being considered the mother of GPS, West said she still preferred using a paper map when driving.

🚨MAJOR BREAKING: Rep. Jamie Raskin just introduced an amendment to BLOCK the provision letting 8 GOP senators sue the U.S. Government for MILLIONS for accessing their phone records in the Jan. 6 probe. Raskin wants it OUT immediately and says House Republicans may sign on. 👉 At least two House Republicans condemned the provision. And for good reason: The entire thing is ridiculous. The Senators’ phones were NOT tapped and investigators did not have access to text messages. investigators were only provided a list of numbers the Senators called. If the provision moves forward, it could allow for $500,000 for each device subpoenaed. If a Senator has a personal, work, and campaign phone they’d be entitled to at least $1.5 million - plus another $500,000 if they weren’t notified of the subpoena. Raskin said the hypocrisy was outrageous: “I'm tight with a number of the police officers who defended our lives on that day. More than 140 officers were violently assaulted, wounded, injured, disfigured, disabled, forced out of their line of work. You know how much money the majority in Congress has given them and their families? ZERO.” CANCEL THIS PROVISION!

🚨MAJOR BREAKING: Hakeem Jeffries has just offered an amendment to the House shutdown bill that would extend the Affordable Care Act tax credits for 3 years. “We have an affordability crisis - and Republicans are burying their heads in the sand.” Jeffries then slammed Republicans for rising costs: “This country is too expensive. Costs aren’t going down under Republican control - they’re going up. Housing costs up. Grocery costs up. Electricity bills through the roof.” He warned that because Republicans refuse to act, “tens of millions of Americans are about to experience dramatically increased premiums, co-pays, and deductibles… some by $1,000 or $2,000 per month.” This must pass.

This is a great explainer. In short, she added language that typically isn’t there to hopefully send a signal and terminate the stay quickly. She must have known or believed that they would slow walk the entire thing if the entire court got its hands on it. This “deal” dramatically hikes healthcare premiums and only exacerbates the affordability crisis. It should be rejected, as should any politics willing to compromise on the basic needs of working people.

A few years ago, I mentioned “Lift Every Voice and Sing” during class. To my surprise, many of my students had never heard of it before although it was written and composed right here in Jacksonville, FL. That day, lessons were put on hold for something greater ❤️
