This is a perfect example of how you can use a real statistic to create a completely misleading picture. 1.3 million sounds insane until you add the context. There are now 8.4 million people on Universal Credit in total, also a record high. Non UK immigration groups make up around 15.5% of claimants and that share has actually FALLEN over the last year. Nearly 9% of all UC claimants are under the EU Settlement Scheme and another 2.8% have Indefinite Leave to Remain. These are overwhelmingly not people who arrived in Britain last week and immediately started claiming benefits. Universal Credit also isn’t just an unemployment benefit. Around half of non UK claimants are actually in work. For people under the EU Settlement Scheme specifically 57.4% of those claiming UC are employed. There absolutely should be restrictions on someone moving here and immediately accessing the welfare state. I don’t think that’s unreasonable at all. But lumping together people who were born here, have lived, worked and paid tax here for years, people with permanent residency, refugees and recent migrants into one scary sounding “1.3 million migrants claiming benefits” headline tells you basically nothing. The way this is being presented is just missing almost every bit of context you would need to actually understand it.
