Here we find Pliny embarrassing Bertrand Russell who concluded in his pop philosophy book full of caricatures and judgements based primarily on a narrow selection of modern secondary sources that Aristotle’s influence on Alexander was ‘nil.’ Whether concerning Alexander’s character, his education, his intellect, his patronage to Aristotle’s research, etc there are numerous ancient sources (Plutarch, Aulus Gellius, Diogenes Laertius, Quintilian, Athenaeus, Theophrastus, and others) which give the opposite conclusion. And despite to what extent you find the accounts plausible, they are too many and too diverse to land on Russell’s easy supposition. Russell’s History is the most influential book on philosophy of the last century, and this is just one of the many ideas from it you will see being parroted by folks, and now exacerbated by LLMs.
